Huge fan of both Ovi and CR7 and I like the comparison.

Their impact and results are very similar as the exceptional goal scorers of their respective sport with the instinct to find the back of the net in any situation. However, the way they arrived at that result is totally different.

Ronaldo represents extreme hard work and discipline, while Ovechkin is simply built different naturally.

Is Ovi NHL's Ronaldo? Many people won't like this cross sports comparison but I will try

Obivously Ronaldo is greater in his own sport as he arguibly the GOAT or close 2'd behind only Messi. While Ovi is barely a Top 10 NHL player ever but there are a lot in common between the two.

- They are both (left) wingers who LOVE to score goals
- Both had a breakthrough season in 2007/08 season
- Both have aged gracefully and still scoring goals. Ronaldo in Saudi and Ovi in NHL (The best hockey league by far) in 2025

Meh. Every other Russian player in the league has managed to stay out of politics in the public sphere. Ovi has chosen not to.

His mother played for Dynamo Moscow and Ovi grew up playing for their youth teams. All the major Soviet athletic clubs were sponsored by a branch of the government/industry. Dynamo’s sponsor? The FSB. IMO this was a role he was more or less born into, and again, it’s not something easily comprehensible to the average western observer.

This guy is the more naturally gifted Ronaldo, and also the better player, when all is said and done, for sure.

He played like he was a bulldozer with a lot of skill when young, so that actually bears quite some resemblance to young Ovi.

The Saudi Pro League is ranked as the 16th toughest league in the world. Put Cristiano Ronaldo in the English Premier League and see how he does at 40 yrs old. Hint, he would be mediocre at best. Then put Ovi in the 16th toughest hockey league in the world and watch him score 5+ goals a game. What Ovi is doing at 39 is more impressive than Ronaldo's exploits in a joke league that only exists for sports-washing purposes.

Aside from that, Ovi is pure class and not a narcissistic shit person. Odd to compare such different athletes and people.

Yes.

Obviously there are a lot of differences I'm their character off the ice / pitch, but if you need to explain nhl players in soccer/football terms to non hockey fans I always use Ovi = Ronaldo for simplicity.

Both have the most goals, neither was the best overall player of their era but are 1B to messi and Crosby.

No comparison will ever be perfect but it's the closest thing

Mcdavid is probably more like messi. Both guys just have so much more natural skill and make it look effortless.

Obviously crosby is messi in Ovi's story in terms of being the face of the sport and having thay rivalry with Ronaldo/ovechkin.

But in terms of natural talent and stylistically Crosby doesn't really compare to messi
