Is mcdavid too good not to win a cup?

I thought this poll was going to be interesting to follow up on in the future, but as some company managed to screw up the one data-job they had, I guess that I'll have to recreate it in the next off-season.

A list of some of the top stars in the league without a Stanley Cup to their name at this point.
But which of these do you think will still win it at least once during the remainder of their career?

I'd recall that about 55% of the voters thought McDavid would win a cup during his career.
 
McDavid on his own is one thing.

Having McDavid + Draisaitl is incredible luck for any franchise. Even a semi-decent front office should be able to get at least one cup win with these two running the offence.

It's going to be a massive lifetime regret for all involved if they don't win.

People attributing the loss to the defensive ability of one forward(who has to play 23 min TOI and carry the offense) while ignoring everyone else’s defensive woes. Is McDavid to blame for Oilers 45% penalty kill too?. McDavid becomes Barkov and the oilers lose 5-2 instead of 6-2.

The fact he doesnt opens up the argument to punt him down that list. He likely passes Jagr eventually for 2nd overall in points, but 2-3 Cups will go a along way in that argument.

We will argue for days that Sid/Ovi alone are ahead of him, then obviously toss in Jagr, Howe, Yzerman, Sakic, and so many other guys with Cups.

Dionne alone is the example. 700+ goals, 6th in points and no one talks about him.

If he's being compared to Crosby then, yes, his defensive game will be brought up given Crosby was as productive offensively while being, at the very least, defensively responsible.

Right, but would better defensive play change the result yesterday?. McDavid was a +- of zero, in other words he could be the greatest defender of all time, the goals Oilers concede come when he’s on the bench, unable to make an impact. Crosby was a great defender, but atleast his other lines held their own and avoided making half the mistakes Bouchard made yesterday. Even in game 1, let’s say prime Crosby gets two points but saves two goals by playing a balanced game. The result is still the same.

He only won if Lemieux was injured at that point. He was clearly on another level in Edmonton.

Yea Edmonton was a great team without Gretzky. But they're only a dynasty with him.

Generational/superstar players generally don't decline that much at 27. I think it's far more likely that he just had a far better supporting cast in Edmonton, in fact its not far more likely we know for a fact he did.

The point is one player can never do it on their own, and Gretzky is a great example of that.

If you want to be considered the best, than this is the cross he must bear. True greats have won the cup.

Bure won a few on a club level with CSKA
 
It would be different if he was a choker, but he has a Conn Smythe and has led the playoffs in scoring twice. If he doesn't win a cup it would be incredibly disappointing for him personally but I don't think he'd be judged differently in history. It's a much different situation than, say, Marcel Dionne who has almost 1800 career points and only 45 in the playoffs.

I know you said you could keep going, but Ted Williams is the huge name missing from that list.

Malone or Stockton are probably the best NBA players to never win.

From your nine players listed, Marino, Bonds, Sanders, and Griffey before going to the Reds and becoming injury plagued are the only players in contention with a player like McDavid.

All things considered, if McDavid were to go Cupless, I think Bonds and Williams remain atop my own list, McDavid would slot in third, and Marino and Sanders round out the top 5 best players to never win a title.

I think he’d be ranked second behind Marino in how damaging not winning a title would be to his legacy. He’ll forever have the Conn Smythe winning near 3-0 comeback, but he’ll almost certainly be kept below lesser players who did win, since the hockey world is a very narrow minded hive-mind.

It’s not his fault he’s saddled with Mike Smith, Jack Campbell, Stuart Skinner as goalies.
