Is mcdavid too good not to win a cup?

Let's ignore the odd man rush caused by a weak turnover under no pressure under a minute left, that's not how you win playoff games but let's blame the goalie for a 3 on 2 screened shot.
It's the on the coach who iced totally gassed McDrai for no reason.

And on Skinner oc. 😁

"Looking to get it deep" nice way of saying he turned it over unnecessarily. Bouchard pinched cause he expected the puck to go deep not his captain turning it over and giving right to the kings dman for a quick breakout.
Dude this game is being touted as one of the better single person efforts in a long time and here you are trying to put the blame on the guy who was the sole reason for FOUR goals for his team. It’s truly pathetic

I see you completely avoided the question. Replace McDavid with any forward you want in the NHL. Does Edmonton win that game?

no one is guaranteed to win a championship no matter how good you are. Dan marino is a prime example of being one of the greatest of all time and not winning.

Ray Bourque is a pretty good example in the NHL. Arguably the second best D-man in NHL history. He had to cup chase and won it in his last game at age 40, in his 22nd season in the league.

If McDavid really wanted, he could make his way to LA as a UFA. Kopitar will retire very soon and Doughty isn't too far after that. However, the rest of the team is pretty good and many key pieces are locked in for years. With the cap going up, McDavid could still get a reasonable salary for his stature and instantly get surrounded by a balanced supporting cast.

My guess is though that he will do a Mike Trout and stay with the undeserving franchise he unfortunately started with...just to hang with Leon.

I've heard some insane things on this forum over the last 25 years.

This is up there.
Would love to see a McDavid Thornton comparison. I think a lot of people wouldn't like it, but it's absolutely true at this point all things considered.

Sure, that seems like a fun comparison. I'll start us off.

In McDavid's third season, he passed Thornton in number of times they made the NHL First All-Star Team. Thornton made it once, the year he won his only Hart Trophy. McDavid has been named to the first All-Star team 5 times.

Crosby didn’t give up any offense willingly, his offense just declined. Watching him play, it’s easy to see that he actually doesn’t sacrifice offense. He shouldn’t be in the same sentence as Yzerman when it comes to defensive play.

The Yzerman offense sacrificing approach only works if your team is good defensively and has good goaltending, which the Oilers do not. Let’s not act like the Oilers will start grinding out 1,2 goal games if McDavid plays better defense.

honestly even Yzerman is heavily exaggerated

yes he improved defensively but even his offensive drop was mostly because he was in his 30s by then and had had some injuries as well

Yes but how many series winning sliding on his back cellys does he have? Your honor I rest my case.

On top of that, he got an all-time great coach and absolutely stacked depth on both offense and defense.

The Yzerman sacrificing his offense to win nonsense is almost pure propaganda.

First clue someone is just parroting what they heard others say is when they trot out Yzerman and to a slightly lesser extent, Sakic.

Yzerman definitely was a much better defensive player, but it’s mostly due to the fact he couldn’t do the things he could do at a younger age offensively.

It’s lunacy to think that the Wings wouldn’t have won all those Cups if they had 155pt Yzerman instead

Thornton was better than McDavid and he retired without a Cup. So it's best not to worry about it right now, McDavid is still young.

Just to be clear, you both meant Shawn Thornton, right? :sarcasm:

It would seem odd to leave the franchise he has been with since he was 18, and just went to Game 7 of the SCF to join a team that has not won a playoff series since June 2014. I’m unfortunately a Angels fan, but it’s hard to compare the Oilers to the Angels. They have had some roster construction issues, but it’s nowhere close to the level of ineptness the Angels have had.

I guess he could want to move on for any variety of reasons, but LA has traditionally been one of the least desirable destinations for UFA, and he would have his pick of the litter if he hit UFA.

Florida has two elite teams with recent championship success and no state income tax.

But my guess is he wants to be like Crosby, Ovechkin, Lemieux and others and do it all in one spot.

Crosby created depth on his team with his ability to play with anyone on his wing. He is also a notably better defensive player than McDavid.

There is a reason he won at every level he played. He is the more versatile player who can contribute in more ways offensively and away from the puck.
So if McDavid’s wingers are placed on RNH’s line(Phil Kessel equivalent) you can say with absolute certainty that his line will perform like HBK 2016?. I highly doubt that. You can’t use that 2016 blueprint for every team, because every player on that third line outperformed their actual ability massively, and that is difficult to replicate. That 2016 performance is not superstar level, and Crosby had great luck with goaltending and his teammates stepping up. I highly doubt an NHL coach goes "Let's have the best player in the world go under ppg and a negative +-, but don't worry, I count on our third line to even up the scoring". No one can generate anything outside McDrai on the Oilers, and adding wingers to RNH won’t change that.
