This dude is lazy. EDM played some very good defensive teams like LA. LA was the best team in the nHL I think this year the last half. Year prior the teams the Oilers played were very very close to the teams TO played in GA

As for Matthews, he is TERRIBLE

It's mindboggling how much of a pass he gets. The guy is invisible for 90% of a game. Just glides around does nothing. If you want to play a non goal scoring non playoff performer 13.5M have at it.

The only time he stood out to me, was ONE TIME tonight. He actually tried to bulldoze a Panther in the Panthers zone in the first period. He half hit him. I cannot remember one other memorable thing he did all game. I find myself thinking this way most of the time I watch him.

He never ever takes a hold of a game and "wants" that puck like other superstars do. Making at least multiple "out of your seat" plays a game, etc. He is "just there"

Calling LA weak is a bit of a fallacy because by their logic the Oilers would have to lose to them for LA to be a good team. We don't really know how LA would do if they didn't draw the Oilers every year. Keep in mind the Oilers only lost to the cup champs the last 3 years and haven't lost this year. That's all 4 years of the streak.

Sounds like all of Toronto wants Marner and Tavares to walk and somehow it's going to make your team magically better, meanwhile Matthews saying there's too many passengers while being completely invisible the entire playoffs and in a elimination game and he gets the free ride? Hes honestly one of the worst selections for captain I've ever seen especially if you compare what Tavares had to say after the game. Soft as hell. I dunno why anyone would want to play in Toronto afte running 2 talented hometown guys out of town, throwing drinks at the bench and jerseys on the ice while they're literally playing. Even as a new fan of the sport I was perplexed by the Leaf's org deciding this was some kind of statement move. Sure JT isn't the best in the playoffs but giving the C to the guy who pulls a Danny Phantom every playoff time possible is certainly not a good decision.

1. Draisaitl was visibly injured, it's not speculation, or a nagging injury, unlike in Matthews' case.
2. Matthews played on a line with Marner and Knies, who, on Draisaitl's line, compares to their talent level?. No one.
3. Matthews has no history of great playoff series in general, unlike Draisaitl. We can say Florida shutting down Draisaitl was a one-off considering his usual production against every other team, we can't say the same for Matthews.

I don't have a horse in this race, but come on, dude. How about the best player in the world? Why is it that Edmonton fans refuse to admit that Draisaitl and McDavid play together a ton?

This guy is supposed to be a superstar and has a C on his jersey now and it’s the same old. 60 goal man in the regular season, 30 goal pace in the playoffs at best. He wasn’t good at 4 nations either.

It’s time to stop making excuses for this guy IMO.

Here’s the leafs formula for building a team.

- Throw all the money at the scorers
- Fail to put money into talented depth (again)
- Watch opposing teams shut down the top lines scorers.
- Watch lines 3&4 along with the bottom d pairs fail to hit the broad side of the barn with the puck.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

This has been going on for EONS. Everyone can see it except for Shanny.

Of course. That would be great. But McDavid and Drsisatl are proven to be fantastic in the playoffs. They are pretty much the opposite of Matthews in that regard.

As far as opportunities go, yeah he is right up there among the worst playoff performers of all-time when it comes to star players. Forget Marcel Dionne, yeah he could have maybe put a big series together and helped the Kings win one at least since he never won a 7 game series in his career, but to be fair the Kings weren't ever considered contenders, and he did get 7 points in 5 games in the win vs. Edmonton in 1982. And had 14 points in 9 playoff games in 1977, doing well against Boston to boot. Not a good resume no, but not expected to have a good one either. Matthews is different. He's always on an elite team going into the playoffs. There have been countless years that a goal or two from him at the right time changes the series. 2-14 record when being able to close out a series is just a horrible one-sided stat.

Matthews reminds me a bit of Joe Thornton that way. Thornton's numbers weren't horrendous, but like Matthews he was always on a good team and never took it to another level, not once. He never seemed to play inspired hockey when it mattered. Never played mean, which is strange because he could be mean if he wanted to. We all have seen Matthews drop the gloves vs. Stamkos a couple of years back. It was ugly. But it wouldn't hurt to see him throw a hit or two.

Yeah, he's up there when it comes to playoff disappointments. I always say one playoff year can change a perception. Datsyuk comes to mind, Alfredsson even. Plenty of players who proved they could eventually do it.

Florida is, McDrai literally turned Hyman who looked abysmal in TO's playoffs into someone who is basically ppg in every playoffs.

He never did that in TO, he had 3 goals and 1 assist in his last 17 playoff games in TO (awful), whereas in Edmonton he had 11 goals and 16 points in his FIRST playoff run, more than what he had in TWICE as many playoff games in Toronto.

Difference? McDrai don't get 33-50% worse in the playoffs. They get better at their already amazing numbers.

Thing is, Kessel scored goals in the playoffs. He had a shot which worked the same in the playoffs as in regular season. Marner's skills as shown in the regular season have not carried over into the playoffs.

I mean, maybe you're saying as a 2nd/3rd line winger Marner can be effective. Perhaps that's true. But that requires a pay cut.

Imo this seriously effects his HOF case. Yeah he's had some impressive regular seasons and his goal scoring numbers are among the best. But how can you induct someone when they turn into a mouse every year come playoff time?
