Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

Where has Matthews been in the playoffs these past 9 years?

I really hope this isn’t your attempt to say that Matthews is as good as Draisaitl in the POs. Cuz thats a pretty dumbass counter
I don’t have a horse in this race and really do not care who of the two is the better PO performer. Starting this conversation from a Oilers perspective after Draisaitls non show against the very same Team in the SC finals is as dumb in my eyes… in fact besides McDavid this Cats team did shut down every superstar they faced the last two years.

Sure you might have a point if the Cats are the only team Matthews has no showed against.

Coming to the conclusion that both are as good as each other in the POs based off of Draisaitl’s one series against the Panthers is completely stupid. One, each players’ PO resumes include a lot more than the last two years. Two, the Panthers arent the only team both players have faced.

Actually, i don’t really even know what youre trying to argue…

Matthews’ “passengers” comment reminds me of a commercial. I don’t actually remember what the commercial was for, but the “scene” of the commercial was a reporter interviewing a star football player (a fictional one) after his team lost. They then had approximately the following dialogue:

Reporter: “Can you give us any insight about what went wrong and why you lost?”
Player: “After much consideration, I’m going to have to place the blame for this loss squarely on my teammates’ shoulders.”
Reporter: “Don’t you think your four fumbles had anything to do with it?”
Player: “…”

That’s the sense of attitude I’m getting out of Auston Matthews.

Hey he scored in game 6 and had TWO WHOLE shot attempts in game 7. Thats 2 potential goals right there.

Wonder what his expected goals were...

There is no other superstar in the league that when you watch a playoff game you just will never notice them. You KNOW when McDavid is out there, you KNOW when Mackinnon is out there... Matthews is just another blue guy floating around. His regular season resume is waaaay too good to not call him a superstar but the word feels so wrong for him given what we just watched this series (and the last couple years).

For a player of his caliber I can't think of a worse playoff performer. It's pretty much undeniable at this point.
The fact that plenty of folks had him over Draisaitl as recently as last season is downright criminal.

I think pre-injury Matthews was strictly better*

*in a regular season game in November. The above comment does not apply to playoff games. Not valid in Quebec.

Not even the worst playoff performer in the Leafs/Panthers series. If anything, he played decent considering he was injured all season.

All of Florida's stars were invisible. Barkov and Reinhart shutdown by M&M, and they needed a 36 year old rat and his 2 finnish sidekicks to carry them to the ECF.

But that will go unnoticed cause ragging on the leafs is the easy, lazy thing to do.

One of the silliest opinions in hockey is pointing to a limited set of games and saying, 'see! The results were the same!'. As if context and sample size don't matter.

You do realize that the only team to beat the Oilers in the last…3 seasons in the playoffs are the cup winners right?
23/24- Panthers
22/23- Vegas
21/22 - Colorado
Not only that but the two goalies the Oilers beat in this playoffs were Cup champion goalies the two seasons prior to last one. That's some serious copium that guy/gal? was drinking.

Finnish sidekicks and the rat? Try watching those three play and then compare to the precious four.

Leafs are an easy target because of how they perform, year in year out. In audio terms, signal to noise ratio is abysmal. Not to mention the rather large proportion of the fans who are obnoxious/cocky. The organization in general including the team and fans have talked the talk, never really walked the walk.

1. Draisaitl was visibly injured, it's not speculation, or a nagging injury, unlike in Matthews' case.
2. Matthews played on a line with Marner and Knies, who, on Draisaitl's line, compares to their talent level?. No one.
3. Matthews has no history of great playoff series in general, unlike Draisaitl. We can say Florida shutting down Draisaitl was a one-off considering his usual production against every other team, we can't say the same for Matthews.
