Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

Not even close as he's good defensively and is still putting up assists, though he may be correctly called the most disappointed playoff goalscorer in history.

This is so old, it's ridiculous.

McDavid will re-sign in Edmonton for 8 years and we will still hear "mCdAvId Is GoInG tO tOrOnTo"

Mind boggling for people that can't comprehend that not every player wants to play in Toronto
I don’t think you read all my posts and the posts before that. What I’m saying is that McDavid is more likely to sign in TO if he wins in Edmonton due to him being a very loyal person.
Relax I’m an Edmonton Oilers fan from Edmonton and hate the Leafs.

I don't disagree, but what loyalty would he be paying back to Toronto? Has Toronto been giving him cash under the table?

How about Crosby. Did he "pay back his loyalty" to Montreal?
Being a homegrown kid….. not saying he will, just saying it’s more likely if he wins in Edmonton. I think then the pressure and optics increase the chances to leave for somewhere else.
I’m an Edmonton native but I can admit that the temptation to move to a “different” or “nicer” place can exist….

One of my heroes growing up was a talented but at 5'7" and 160 lbs, tiny NHLer. This guy would never wow you with his speed, shot or stick handling, but his will to win was...well, if he didn't have blood on his sweater, his or an opposing players, it was a bad game for him.

His name? Henry Richard.

THAT is what Matthews and Marners of this era don't understand or certainly not willing to put out.

MAURICE RICHARD BLEEDING IN THE HANDSHAKING LINEUP...

THIS IS THE WAY...

You know the crazy part about this thread -- if Matthews re-signs in Toronto (or probably even if he doesn't), he unironically should probably go down as the best Leaf ever. The Leafs have never had a 500 goal scorer (Sundin leads with 420, Matthews currently at 401 with like 350 fewer games), only 3 Hart winners in the history of the Franchise (last one in the 50s). Matthews is an actual superstar on a team that hasn't really had one since longer than many of us have been alive.

Yes, Matthews hasn't been great in the playoffs, and he probably deserves more than a little criticism for the Leafs losing early in the playoffs all the time. But he's still a damn good player

So far, yes he joins a list of other notable Leafs who got a fanbase to cheer him on, providing one highlight after another. Gilmour, Clark, Sundin, Cujo, other notable figures who wore blue and white but were never able to bring a Cup to Toronto.

Matthews may very well end up being the best of the group, at least statistically, and fans in attendance will probably still wear his jersey to games long after he leaves town.

Most talented by far, not even close to best.

He did less than Gilmour, Sundin, Salming, Wendel with more talent by his side.

Saying he hasn't been great is an understatement, out of 66 playoff games he literally has 0 massive games, 0 hat tricks, 0 4 point games, disappearing a ton, leading the PP to 0/30 in elimination games.

Sundin has gone further than him in the playoffs, has more goals and has a higher gpg (with less talent in a lower scoring era)
Gilmour has gone further than him in the playoffs, has similar gpg despite going for 1 goal in his last 13 playoff games (.33gpg to Matthews .38 gpg) and has a higher ppg, despite playing with less talent
Clark has gone further than him in the playoffs, has more playoff goals, has a higher gpg despite playing with less talent
Salming didn't go any further than Matthews but he wasn't soft and greedy

If Matthews is gone, his jersey won't be retired, his jersey won't be honored, I don't even know if he gets honored after his career is over. Matthews and Marner are the embodiment of everything wrong with the newer generation of athletes, soft, greedy, arrogant, coasting on talent and ultimately losers

Not even remotely close to the best. There's more to the game than points, and stats. People like you can twist your mind into pretending that Matthews is good based on the stats.

Pretty sure hes playing injured. Hasnt he had surgery on both shoulders and missed games every seasons? But many playing true injurys this time of the year. Drai did last season.

Only good , hes only on a 4 year contract. Injury proned franchise players is a curse for a org.

Leafs can still turn the Fla serie around, Fla has decline from recent years, and it cant be worse then last game for the Leafs

A game 7 in Toronto, who knows?

Unfortunately we’ll only find out at the end of the playoffs the extent of Matthews injuries.

Exactly, by what metric he is being measured as non injured vs. injured. When has he had a big playoff when healthy?
Never. And that's a knock against him for sure.

But the past few years are when you'd have expected him to break out of it. Pavel Datsyuk was a terrible playoff player until he figured it out. Matthews hasn't really had that opportunity.

Some criticism is warranted. But people are piling on and the guy really hasn't been healthy the past few years. Last season he had to leave in the middle of a game he was so sick. And yes - everyone gets hurt... but not all injuries are the same.

Marner is a totally different story. Not only has he been healthy but he makes terrible moves that lead to goals against on the regular. He's an awful playoff player. After Four Nations I thought maybe he could turn it around - and maybe he still will - but he continues to disappear when it matters.
