Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

So now explain his 6th all time to 51st all time in the playoffs gpg drop BEFORE this year.

He goes from a superstar player to a 1st line centre in the playoffs. It doesn’t mean he can’t get better throughout his career. He’s still younger than MacK/Drai/McDavid.

The same way there was a Rantanen thread on these boards when he struggled and now he’s lighting it up.

For legacy reasons, if he went to Toronto and won, he would be cemented as one of the greatest ever as none of the other Greats won beyond their original teams and in their 20s let alone bring a perennial loser, be it the biggest market, a championship for the first time in 50 years.
McDavid already one of the greatest ever, and a cup with Edmonton reshapes the big four into the big five. Oilers also haven’t won the cup in 30+ years, so going to Toronto won’t really add to his legacy any more than staying.

you were the one that said he declined surgery, not me
I am going off you post

I never said he declined surgery. I said maybe he doesn’t want season ending surgery.

He could also not want surgery in the offseason. Lots of players try conservative methods before surgery.

Yeah, not good enough.

So that explains the previous years, but now we have to add in his transformation from Matthews to Glassews.

So he's the highest paid in the league, injured and an underperformer. Great combo, are you a fan of the Leafs or a fan of him?

I’m a fan of giving him a chance at a healthy season. He went from a 40 goal season to a 69 goal season just last season.

What if Washington traded Ovechkin when he had a down year?

It's not good enough but he's been hurt the past three playoff years. That's just a fact.

Totally agree with people that he did himself no favours before that but he really hasn't been healthy in the past few years. And the Leafs aren't doing him any favours by keeping everything so secret. They need to give their fans some transparency.

he will be a UFA and leave for free
book it

Sure, then he has 3 more years of Matthews.

Currently this is the Leafs centres:

Matthews
Tavares (UFA)
Domi
Kampf

You trade Matthews and they’re a lottery team unless they’re getting a 1C back.

yup 3 more years
which if adds to your give him a chance
after 9 years you should have your answer.

What would you offer for him that makes the Leafs a better team?

The Leafs have no centre depth and you’re not trading him unless you’re getting a massive package back.
His value is at an all time low now, so the Leafs should give him one more year in hopes of him bouncing back. He’s at an age where most players are past their peak, so if he doesn’t bounce back the best hope is to hold him off until you see a Rantanen type of disgruntled star that you could trade him for.

He has had 9 years.

Ovechkin in his first 9 years had 31 goals in 58 games.
Matthews has 25 goals in 66 games, before this year he had 23 in 55.

Those Capital teams had 1 borderline HOF player (Backstrom), Tavares/Marner and Nylander are better than him. Matthews has done less with more in a higher scoring era and he has already missed more time than Ovechkin did in his entire career.

Completely different player in a completely different situation with a totally different mindset.

Sure and neither won in their first 9 years.

The reality is most players don’t win and especially as not the main piece. How long did it take Barkov? Barkov was a worse playoff player than Matthews until last year.

What if Florida traded him after 9 years? What if Edmonton traded McDavid after 9 years?

Brady Tkachuk is approaching his 8th season with 0 success. Why isn’t Ottawa shopping him?

1 is a Russian manbear that absolutely destroys players through hitting and goal scoring with little help.

The other guy moons security guards, wears purses and is always hurt while being the most expensive guy in the NHL.

Matthews simply put has too many problems and is not even close to analogous to Ovechkin.

that is what dreams are built on
problem is in the 9 years of Barkov, FLA was not planning a parade every year like TO was

darn right rip off
and his latte was cold too
Any Leafs ticket or jersey is a rip off- even if you're a fan of the other team.

When I see Sens fans in the crowd I have to wonder if it wouldn't have been cheaper for them to go to Ottawa and buy a ticket and a hotel room for a night

the difference is that Ovi has proven before that he can take over a series. He had 11goals and 10 assists in 14 games in 09. Ovi’s first four playoffs were all over 0.5 goals per game and above a PPG all while with a weaker supporting cast. Matthews has not shown he can elevate or even maintain his game in the playoffs at all. Look at Thornton, 10 years into his career you would have said the same thing, has he been any different afterwards? No.

For me, retiring with the franchise that drafted you and winning a cup with them adds to a career however not doing so doesn’t impact it negatively.

There will literally be highways renamed after McDavid in Edmonton if he wins the cup, good chance there will be if he doesn’t. (Speed limit 97)
