Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

I hate the Leafs but no hes not the worst playoffs performer not even close

That being said he does need to step up more in big games hes one of the most talented players in the league

No. He is not The worst playoff performer ever. But his goalscoring does go down big Time. Still one of the best Toronto player of all Time.

Define "a couple of great showings".

Matthews has earned his reputation based on his CAREER work up to this point. So him having a dominant couple of games to end this series doesn't change that. He'd need to actually have a dominant playoff run where he plays at a "otherwordly" level before his reputation changes.

For instance, Matthews scores a hattrick tonight but the Leafs still lose the series, his reputation doesn't change. Matthews goes on to lead the league in playoff goal scoring en route to the Leafs first Cup since '67 does.
He puts up 4/4/8 in the next 3 games and the Leafs win in 7, something like that. Wouldn't hurt to kill it in the next round either.

I still hope the trend continues and the Leafs go down in flames, but Matthews has an opportunity to silence some critics at least.

Aside from Marner (slight reach) and Nylander. It would honestly have to be infuriating to be a Leafs fan, and just see your star players just choke year after year in the playoffs, when the entire team is loaded lol.

I went over to the Leaf boards and was shocked how everyone turned on a two time 60 goal scorer, wanting to trade a home grown Hart winner. A fierce competitor who leaves everything on the ice. Leaf fans have very high expectations and no tolerance for anything other than perfection. /s

Auston Matthews is a weird way to pronounce Marcel Dionne.
Matthews actually experiences a bigger dropoff than Dionne.

Dionne went from .54gpg in the season to .42gpg in the playoffs.

Matthews goes from .64gpg in the season to .39gpg in the playoffs.

As a Blues fan, Keith Tkachuk was an awful playoff performer in comparison to his regular season stats. Regular season 73pts per 82gp. Playoffs at 53pts per 82gp. And his down years late in his career affected his ppg more in the regular season than in the playoffs. So it's even more stark in reality. Don't quote me on this, but I also believe he NEVER won a game 7, and was a part of MULTIPLE 3-1 BLOWN series leads. When the Blues made the conference finals in 2001, he had 2 GOALS TOTAL for the playoffs, in 15 games. I'm actually shocked both of his son's seem to be clutch.

Thornton and Stamkos are worse. As mentioned a dozen times already, Matthews outscores the other team when he’s on the ice, including Barkov and the Panthers.

He had more points than anyone on Tampa both times they met in the playoffs, on top of putting up a defensive clinic many nights.

He scored 5 goals against Boston matched up a lot against Bergeron (also won that matchup).

Had 4 goals in 6 games against the Presidents trophy winning Capitals as a rookie the season before they won the Cup.
