Is Matthews the worst playoff performer ever?

When the Bruins had the Leafs last year in the playoffs, there was a question among us of which of the core 4 Leafs we'd take, I immediately said Nylander. He shows more leadership than the others, and look where he is in these playoffs- 6-9-15.

That said, Matthews has 10 points in 10 games these playoffs, 58 points in 65 career playoff games. Not bad at all. I would imagine he gets the most smothering coverage defensively that opponents can offer, and I think a lot of people on here expect him to be chasing McDavid on his heels as well, which is a tall order for anyone.

I don’t think many expect him to be chasing McDavid. But it’s not unreasonable to expect him to be at least close to the same tier of Drai, McKinnon and Kucherov. He’s not even close.

People keep saying this like it’s weird to talk about one of the leagues highest paid player underperforming on a hockey forum
Its just so over done. 'Is he the most overrated player ever' is 'the worst playoff performer ever'. He isn't either of those things.

Does he need to put the puck in the net....Yeah obviosuly.

Has he played well outside of scoring and impacted the game positively for Toronto? Also yes..

A lot of people disagree with you it seems

Lots of internet hyperbole.

Pretty much. It's one of those cases where the truth lies somewhere in the middle, between these two hyperboles.

Lack of goals is something people can point to and that is how he got his money. He kind of has to come up with some big goals going forward if he wants to avoid criticism.

Joe Thornton has ghastly playoff stats for a player that scored 1500 points in the NHL. Especially considering how consistently good the Sharks were during that period of time.

The funny thing is, a couple great showings here would just about erase all of that reputation.
Define "a couple of great showings".

Matthews has earned his reputation based on his CAREER work up to this point. So him having a dominant couple of games to end this series doesn't change that. He'd need to actually have a dominant playoff run where he plays at a "otherwordly" level before his reputation changes.

For instance, Matthews scores a hattrick tonight but the Leafs still lose the series, his reputation doesn't change. Matthews goes on to lead the league in playoff goal scoring en route to the Leafs first Cup since '67 does.

When I remember Matthews from 2017 to last year I remember a guy with a shot that didn't even seem real. Something obviously changed because he's not ripping goals from distance anymore. He's missing the net constantly. This is why Ovis record is going to be impossible to beat. Ovi still has his shot at 39 while losing most other attributes. Matthews still has other attributes but seems to have lost his shot.

Matthews has been underwhelming, but winning a cup while your star is underwhelming has been done before. Crosby was absolutely terrible during the 2016 championship run, averaging below 0.8 ppg, a massive drop from his 1.06 ppg average in the regular season and the Penguins still won because everyone else stepped up. Matthews so far has been better than Crosby during that 2016 run. We’ll see if the Leafs get the goaltending and scoring from other lines to bail out Matthews like Crosby has been bailed out time and time again.

Joe Thornton made the playoffs 19 times in his Hall of Fame career.

He produced at over a point-a-game in the playoffs in zero of those 19 years.

That's staggering.

I still can't fathom why Kyle Dubas thought Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton were good veterans for his young core to learn from. It was just a staggeringly stupid decision. I swear he sometimes did things becuase everybody told him those were the wrong things to do.
