Is Matt Duchene's contract a good example of what Kadri should be getting?

When thinking of Nazem Kadri's next contract one of the players that comes to my mind when thinking of a comparable is what the Avalanche gave Matt Duchene after his ELC contract had finished. So is his deal the best example of what Kadri should get in his next contract or is there better examples to use?

Usually you would include the contract given just saying. But I think Duchene is a better player But we just have a small sample size from kadri

Duchene had two very good years and an off year during his ELC while Kadri has only had one good year in a shortened season.

I still think Kadri gets a similar deal though, 2 year around 3 million

His contract is likely a bridge contract like Duchene's (one where it's a short term smaller money for Kadri to prove himself) or it's a contract like JVR's where the money is bigger (but not that big) and the term is much longer.

I hope so, but bridge contracts have started to be phased out a little bit. Hopefully Kadri isn't greedy.

hope so, his 1 shorten season isn't enough for us to overpay yet. also has tavares fired his agent yet, has to be the best bargain in the NHL behind giroux.

Kadri played well for about 35-40 games this year, and then tailed off badly. He'll have to do more than that to compete with Duchene.

Probably a shorter term contract would be best. If he's a PPG player after that then he won't have any trouble being paid like one.

are there any objective fans who would not be thrilled to send Kadri AND the Leaf's first round pick this season to Colorado for Duchene?
That would be a fantastic deal but Colorado wouldn't do it. Regardless, that illustrates how far Kadri is behind Duchene.

Anyway, I'm hoping Kadri will be sent with Phaneuf to Nashville for Shea Weber:yo:

Duchene is the exception, not the rule. Colorado has only short term contracts and a lot more mismanagement. I wouldn't look at them as a guide.

Look at Skinner, Eberle, Seguin, etc for comparable contracts to what Kadri will get.

If he can pull that off then HE should be running the Leafs and Nonis should be driving the zamboni. An excellent half season does not get you a long term big money contract. He'll get a PK Subban/Matt Duchesne contract. You can bet on it

I'll drive Kadri off a cliff before I give him that much.

I think even Duchene's contract is a bit high compared to the current market. Duchene's contract was signed in june of last year. That was before a lot of the new decisions were agreed upon with the last CBA.

There are other young promising players that have had smaller contracts that are comparable to Duchene in "team impact" like Huberdeau (who is a touch under 3.1).

On the same token you have some ridiculous sophmore contracts beginning next season like Skinner (5.75 next season).

I see Kadri signing somewhere in between 3 and 3.25. Anything more is an overpayment for an RFA like Kadri. Not sure if arbitration takes reduced schedules in to account or not. Im assuming there is some sort of formula out there for it.

FFS our biggest need is a #1 center and you want to trade him for a dman with a
big contract with the cap going down.

Kadri is our future #1, make no mistake about it. We will not trade him and have grabovski as our #1C. If that happens we dont make the playoffs for another 5 years.
Some people think grabo walks on water. He will never be a #1C on any team in the league so no kadri is going nowhere.

Kadri rocks, Duchene is ****

Yeah, but I think Kadri has a lot more to prove. In 48 games he has proven that he belongs on this team and that he is a clutch goal scorer/playmaker.

I think the whole "it was a shortened season" excuse is extremely sad and unoriginal. 44 points in 48 games does not happen by accident. He made it work with basically everyone he played with. I don't think he deserves the 7M contract for 6 years yet, but he's well on his way is he can pull off his magic again this year. 3M for 2 years, a "show me" contract is what he deserves.

If he can match or improve his point production from this season, he'd be in the 80-90 point range next season which is mega clutch.

Just gonna throw it out there, but Wellwood had 42 points in 48 games early on too, it's a little early to assume Kadri's gonna be near-PPG from now on.

To me its pretty simple...

You either give him a bridge contract... something thats 1-2 years and under 3 mill...

or you give him something similar to what JVR got from Philly... 6 years at say 4 mill per and hope you have an absolute steal.

This.

I'd love to give him the JVR deal.

Would Colorado trade Duchene for Kadri straight up? No? Yeah right, they're not even remotely the same player. Kadri had a good season, but he will never be Matt Duchene. Duchene got screwed over on his first new contract, the Avs won't be as lucky next year when he's up for an extension.

drafted later, and lesser expectations, he should get less

Duchene is/was considered a 'potential' franchise center, Kadri is not

I get a kick when guys say he performed badly down the stretch. How did Seguin do? Hall? Oh, he never made it to the post season.

Guy played great considering the game became tighter. Sending Phil on a break away pass in game two was beautiful. Winning more key faceoffs in game seven then anyone thought he would was wonderful.

Before you guys go on and are critical of players and your team remember what a good run they had with such a young unproven squad. Look at the Rangers and where they are. I honestly believe the best young teams in the conference are NYI, Ott and the Leafs and looking forward to a good decade of the Leafs and Kadri.

What will his contract be like. Probably a bridge to get more of a baseline but he will get paid on this contract and also have to perform.

Very true, but also a very big difference in the player's and their drive. Not to mention that Wellwood got those points playing with Sundin, whereas Kadri got most of his without anyone close to Sundin.

did wellwood have the determination and drive that kadri has?

I hate when people compare him to wellwood.
