I’m thinking that Keefe’s job security is on the line for both Chicago and Detroit. They are both soft opponents that any elite team should roll over. If the Leafs lose tomorrow, my guess is Keefe is done. Chicago is absolute roadkill. Not only is Chicago winless six games in, they haven’t even led in a game this season. A loss to the Blackhawks would stretch the Leafs losing streak to five games and would be as big an embarrassment as the loss in Pittsburgh. Shanahan isn’t going to fire Dubas and ownership is too distracted with a family feud to fire them both, and the core isn’t getting traded any time soon. Something would have to happen with a loss in Chicago and that something would almost certainly be sacking Sheldon Keefe. Even a win in Chicago might not be enough if the Leafs lose at home to Detroit.

To push this speculation thread even further out there, my guess is that Keefe is replaced by John Tortorella. Not because Tortorella is the right man for the job, but because management will be so angry at the Leafs over-paid core that they will want to punish the players with as brutal a coach as they can find. Sort of like saying, “You give up on two coaches because you don’t like head games and being yelled at? Well, here’s a nice quiet, mellow fellow for ya. Enjoy the rest of your f—king season.”

Mega corporations work slowly.

Keefe is safe for a while. The problem is the players and the guy who assembled them. Firing Keefe is the easiest move for sure. And the contract extension may be a tell Dubas knows something.

His main liability is he swore too much in the fake Amazon propaganda thing.

and as you say, Rogers has bigger problems right now vs the money making Leafs

No.

This management group isn't going to fire another coach. Generally speaking front offices get to go through two coaches before they themselves start to get removed.

They will either have to right the ship, or they all go down with it.

  1. Does Keefe have the ability to devise and implement a system that can make the Leafs a true SC contender
  2. Does he have the confidence of the players (specifically the "stars") or have they tuned him out
Answer those 2 questions and you have your decision made for you.

Personally I expect Keefe will be the first one to face the age should the Leafs not turn their play around soon. Fire the coach is usually the first step in the team is playing well below expectations hand book is it not?

Keefe is the low-hanging fruit. If anything, you can Dubas. But Keefe is Dubas' guy so his firing is inevitable ala Dave Nonis.

The emphasis should be placing this on the players - the core in particular- as many have alluded to. It would reflect poorly on the organization to fire a coach biyearly.

I believe the answer to both questions is probably no, but I would be really surprised if they did anything like that after losing to Chicago and even a Detroit loss after that.. Yes they look like crap, but its only 6 games in. Colorado and Vegas look like crap too and both also did not do as well as expected in the playoffs. I don't think the Leaf's ownership feels any more anxious than those other team right now but if it were to extend to maybe 5 more turd games then perhaps. They got goalied in a couple of their earlier losses but still looked like a top end club, especially in the absence of AM. Keefe's departure, if it happens, is tied to the clubs continued lack of intensity. If they have tuned him out like they did Babcock then something has to be done. If they can at least compete harder then the team will put up with iffy results for a while longer while some players find their game.

KD committed to his lineup and and his coach and Shanny has stayed right behind him. It would take a gun to his head by ownership to make a move before he absolutely had to.

While I don't disagree with your reasoning why nothing will be done yet, if the answer to both questions is, in fact, no, what's the point in delaying the inevitable?

Keefe’s post game comments last night were embarrassing. It was like we were some rebuilding team trying to find a positive against a “cup contender”. Whatever he was trying to convey was pathetic. It also showed he’s now circling the wagons to save his job polishing turds. It reminded me of Babcock’s last days.

I’d guess Dubas goes before Keefe. Could be some interesting times ahead if this mess continues.

I stopped watching after the second period to watch tv with my kids instead so I must have missed these really good things he was talking about lol Sure didn’t see anything in the 11 shot performance during the first 2 periods.
