Is John Tavares a Hall of Fame Center?

It's a tough call. It's crazy to say about a guy who has 1100 points, but I feel like he never lived up to his draft hype. I think people were expecting a McDavid/Crosby type NHL career for him, but he never reached those levels. He still was/is a great player though.

He's not a "top 10 of all time" guy, but hes going to have the resume of a solid HHOF player.

With him him at 492 goals and just entered the top 50 for goals scored all time, the next 3 guys he will pass on the list are Joe Mullen, Lanny McDonald and Glenn Andersen. All in the HHOF and all far inferior players to Tavares, even if Tavares retired today.

Hockey has loose entry for the hall and under those rules, Tavares is going in pretty easily. Its why you see so many in here complaining about how easy it is. A player they dont like is tracking to go in and they are furious. I didnt hear much outrage when likable Bernie Federko got the nod.

The thing is, he keeps scoring. 70 points in 69 games. Just steady goals in a Mike Gartner-like type of way. Certainly peaked rather well, albeit a low scoring time in NHL history. But was about 30 seconds away from winning a scoring title. Tavares never blew you away with his game, not even in junior, but he was that type of guy who just had the hockey sense and that's why he aged well. Never a great skater, but it never mattered. Hasn't done squat in the playoffs in his career. But he's not done yet. He should rather easily get 600 goals in his career, and that doesn't include if he hangs around too long. I mean he'll probably have 600 in the next 3 years. That's hard to keep him out. Even if there are many more impressive resumes in the HHOF.

So that's the qualification for Hofer's? Would he be #1 C in Montreal?? I hope the writers don't go by that standard lol.
Yes, absolutely. He has been spectacular. Looks like the NYI fan base HAS STILL NOT LET IT GO.

At the time, Stamkos was probably the more realistic comparison. And I think Stamkos has had a better career, no slight to JT.

Tavares wishes he was a fraction of the playoff performer Anderson was.

Rick Martin isn't in the HOF. He was a more prolific goalscorer than Tavares.

Is Tavares a better player than Martin?

Then you have Mogilny, Roenick, Damphousse, T. Fleury.

IF he stick around and get another 200pts. I say he will get in.

John Tavares is a hall of fame lacrosse player. His nephew is probably like a Hockey Canada hall of famer for being a beast at the Kiddy TSN Cup. Hockey Hall of Fame? Nooo.

roenick is in
Fleury and mogilny have external baggage.

Martin and Neely are interesting to compare. If Neely is in, should Martin be in?

All these guys are a step above Damphousse who is a more fringe candidate.

Good try, read my post on me saying it's close.

He should get on the fact he currently plays for the Leafs (that's a thing....right?)

AKA, it's close. By pure numbers yes, by all other standards, not so much. You do wonder if Toronto helps or hurts his cause. On one hand he played a bunch of season on a underwhelming Islanders team. On the other hand, the year he leaves the Islanders are predicted to be dead last and make the playoffs and the ECF 2xs while in Toronto, with a much better team, he's only been out of round one once.

I would compare him to Phillip Rivers.

I like neither of these guys, but Skip nails it when he said he should be in the hall of really good.
