Is John Tavares a Hall of Fame Center?

I don't see how he isn't based on the current criteria.

People have a very different definition of a Hall of Famer than the one the HHOF induction committee does. People think HOF players are like top 50 players when there's currently 289 NHL players in it and it keeps growing.

For me he is not.
If he does, he will have to wait a long time

Depends how he finishes his career. He's currently at 492 goals - if he gets to 600 he's basically a lock for the HHOF. No player with 600+ goals isn't there - not many players with 600+ goals in general.

He sits 67th all time in points and only 3 non-eligible players above him haven't made the HoF so I would say yes, but if he doesn't it's because he was such a playoff failure.

That would require three more years of his average season of 34 goals per (providing he scores another 6 this season). At 35, 36 and 37 that's a lot to ask.

I was talking more about Anderson than Hawerchuk, but the difference even between him and Tavares is not only the raw numbers/peak, but also the fact that Tavares has so far failed spectacularly in Toronto which has a star studded lineup and they've not just failed at winning the cup, they've failed at making an even semi decent run with some horrendous collapses where Tavares was the captain. Hawerchuk not so much.

Hawerchuk also finished as playoff ppg scorer, Tavares is at .74 and will likely only go down. Hawerchuk was also ppg 12/15 playoffs and Tavares is ppg 1/9, his best run being a literal ppg run whereas Hawerchuk has 8 points in 4 games, 13 points in 10 games, 14 points 8 games

Hawerchuk made it out of the first round only twice in his first fifteen seasons, three times in his entire career.

My opinion hasn't changed : he's somewhere between Mats Sundin (A 3rd Quartile HHOF'er) and Pierre Turgeon (A 4th Quartile HHOF'Er). Based on precedent, should clearly be in, but he's not someone that absolutely has to be in either.

Toronto has a clear cup contending roster and they've made the 2nd round 1/6 years Tavares has been here. Probably has a lot to do with his awful production which cannot be said for Hawerchuk.

I think you would be surprised how close their production is adjusted for era. Leafs struggles have been mainly goaltending and lack of depth scoring despite the prevailing narrative.

500 goals - soon enough. Check
1100 points and counting. Check.
Just short of a point a game is a knock.

He gets in imo. There are worse players in the Hall.

Yep. People bring way too much of their own subjectivity into it.

JT will finish his career above 500 goals and probably around 1200 points. Pretty much every player who reaches 500 goals or 1000 points gets in The Hall. JT is very very very likely getting in. If he wins a Cup, it's guaranteed.

Sure? Not saying he wont. Just saying he prob shouldn't.

I feel you need to win some hardware to get in. But that's just me .
I don't see why he shouldn't if essentially every other player with similar career statistics is also getting in.

I get the argument for the Hall having higher criteria, but they are what they are now. They'd have to retroactively remove people to reset the standards and they're obviously not doing that.

durability and consistency are really important for any athlete, hockey no different. so i'd say he has that going for him too. a couple years ago i'd have probably said 'no' but now i think he is. especially if he can put up another excellent season or two. would like to see him stay with the leafs too, at least in terms of his CV for the Hall.

Fair enough, you can think he doesn't deserve it.

But your original post was "I don't see it", yet by your own admission, based on criteria he will get in.
What I said was ambiguous enough that you can see I meant "I don't see him as a hall of fame player" - which hasn't stopped them before! :snide:

All those players shouldn't have made it either. My point stands and it applies to all players before and after him. You should need some hardware to make the hall.

For me as a Canuck fan I can see why the Sedins made it. Art ross's and Hart. But was always shocked that Luongo made it. He never won any awards. But that's the NHL Hall of Fame for ya .

I'm a Canucks fan and was extremely pleased the Sedins got in. But they pretty much only got in because they cleared 1000 points, and had only one major trophy each.

To be logically consistent with your position, you would have to be in favour of retroactively removing everyone in the Hall who just barely cleared 500 goals or 1000 points, including the Sedins, in order to raise the standard.
