Is John Tavares a Hall of Fame Center?

Hall of Massive Doucheness

During his free agency, he meets with the Sharks. Turns out he never wanted to go to SJ, he had already decided on TOR and he just wanted the Sharks to take him out to a free fancy dinner.

And then the whole 'I love the Islanders, I will stay' fakeness.
Do you really think he just took advantage of the Sharks for a free meal?

That's some fascinating thinking.

My point is that he strung the Sharks along when his heart was dead-set on the Leafs.
He, his family, and his agent were doing their due diligence. Even if he was dead set on becoming a Leaf if he got a low-ball offer from Toronto or if they tried any shenanigans at the signing table then he would need a Plan B. To not look around would not be doing right to his wife and future kids.

This also happens all the time - multiple teams pursue a free agent, but the player can only sign with one team. It just so happens he was one of the highest profile UFAs in recent memory.

0% chance his attendance at a Sharks pitch meeting has any bearing on his HoF candidacy

I am a high bar HOF guy and I already think the standard has dropped too low. The way I see it is if you have to ask or think about it then that player doesn’t belong
I see what you mean, and I agree to an extent, but I think the HOF Standard doesn't need to be as strict as you think it should be.

By that train of logic, anyone who isn't First Ballot isn't worth Induction at all.

His level of player shouldn't, but he probably will. Especially since the media types seem to love him and hype him up as better than he actually is.

Personally think a player needs hardware to even have a shot. I'm not a fan of "compilers" who have long careers of being solid getting in, even if they weren't great for a prolonged period of time.

Way better than alot of people give him credit for in his prime, because it was in a low scoring era.

If Marleau gets in, so should Tavares easily.

he gets in easily. Captained the most important team in the league to the 2nd round, Olympic gold, ppg career, strong leadership qualities. He's in.

My AC is set at 22 which is about 1/3 the average IQ of this board or half of when talking about the Leafs.

Turgeon was punished because he sat on the bench like a bitch in Piestany. JT might not have been in the middle of it but he’d not have been on the bench admiring his manicure.

He’s gonna get 1000 points probably within a month and will likely finish with at least 1200-1300 and 500+ goals. I swear half of the people here think the ‘average NHL forward’s career’ is 700 points when really it’s probably more like 80-120.

No awards and no Cups? Guys with worse numbers and no awards and Cups, or even one Cup that they kinda helped for are in.

He finishes around 550-800-1350 and yeah, he’s going to be in.

Depends what his job looks like on his next contract. If he shifts to wing he can stay ~PPG in the top 6 for another 5+ years, if he wants to stay at C he probably gets bumped down to 3C sooner than later.

He'll get in.. debatable whether he *should* be in.. but he'll get in. Being a Toronto captain for a while is going to help a lot.

Tavares is going to hit the magic 1000 this year and will probably hit 500g as well which is nothing to sniff at through the seasons he has played. He's one of those guys that was steadily very good year in and year out and compiled his way up.. and for a couple of seasons he was a Hart finalist so it isn't even like he was never one of the better players in the league.

He’ll compile his way to ~550 goals and ~1300 points. Maybe those milestones are enough, maybe not. He’d better hope they are because that’s basically his only realistic chance unless he somehow wins a Cup - he’s accomplished nothing else of note except some decent numbers. I can’t see him winning any major awards, and it’s unlikely the Leafs win a Cup. If he wins a Cup, he’s in, even if it’s as a passenger in a few years when he’s old. That’s probably his best bet.

Yes. Should end his career with 1200-1300 pts, 500 goals, was a star maple leaf, etc. You could say he’s a compiler or whatever, but he’s getting in.

Based on his current resume and trajectory, I'd say he shouldn't be. The Hall is way too watered down. But he probably will be.

Decent international resume, good numbers, captain of an Original 6 team. Sounds like Sundin.

Right now, no.

One thing hurting Tavares, apart from the lack of individual hardware, is his lack of showstopper career moments or playoff runs.

He's currently 72nd in playoff points among active players, tied in total points with Teuvo Teräväinen, J.T. Miller and Tyler Toffoli. That isn't a HHoF career.

To be a Hall of Famer, he would need one of these two:

1. Wins the Stanley Cup as the captain as the Maple Leafs (guaranteed HHoF, regardless of performance)
2. Plays a few more seasons at a PPG, with multiple solid performances in multiple deep playoff runs as a Maple Leaf
