Is John Tavares a Hall of Fame Center?

Hall of Massive Doucheness

During his free agency, he meets with the Sharks. Turns out he never wanted to go to SJ, he had already decided on TOR and he just strung the Sharks along. Gotto a free fancy dinner out of it.

And then the whole 'I love the Islanders, I will stay' fakeness.

He will get in, but I don't think he should. The HHOF has much too low a bar for entry IMO (unless you are European).

He's roughly a top 10 center during his career with a peak in the top 3 perhaps. Is that enough? I personally don't think so but the committee probably disagrees.

I doubt he did all that for one free meal lol.

Getting 1000pts is not the ticket anymore. He needs individual hardware and/or something notable about the way he plays. He's not re-inventing the center position, so it couldn't be something like that.

If he can reach 500 goals and 1,250 points, which I don't think is unreasonable, he would be in the top 50 in goals and top 40 in points. That starts a conversation and would be enough if he had a multitude of Cups and awards. But since he doesn't, he likely needs more.

But to do that, he essentially needs to maintain around an average of low 20s in goals and about 50 points in the next 5 years. Again, I think that is reasonable enough, especially if he can surpass those averages by a fair bit in the next couple seasons, giving him more room for regression. I think if he's able to reach 550 goals and 1,300 points, it becomes tough to leave him out even without awards. Pretty sure everyone with those totals are either in or going to be in, but I am not Hall expert by any means.

Let's say he plays another 4 years and finishes with over 1200 points but doesn't win a cup. Would his career be all that different from Sundin or Alfredsson?

No, man. Those players were better than John. If you watched them, you would know. He is probably going in, and I don’t like it. Don’t like his style. Too soft, and too robotic. Very uninspiring player. Sundin and Alfie are way better players.

I grew up watching them. I agree that Alfie and Mats were superior players to Tavares, but their career stats and lack of hardware (the argument against Tavares)are comparable and I think JT gets in eventually.
