is Jesper Bratt the biggest draft steal the last 10 years?

There's also other factors you have to look at, such as historical sample sizes. A lot of people look at the 3rd round pick of Fox so let's use that point. I'll use examples of quality, established players that aren't questioned as NHL talents.

Currently active, drafted in the third round were:
Letang
Pesce
Parayko
Lindell
McNabb
Fox

That's just defencemen. Adding forwards, we also add:

Marchand
Bjorkstrand
Smith
Killorn
Point
Trochek

So, if we look at the sixth round:

Stone
Atkinson
Lee
Bratt
Mangiapane

Add in defence we can also include:

Spurgeon
Manson

So if we look at who was taken the last 10 drafts, then yes Bratt is likely the best draft steal as the 3rd round has proven to produce top-tier NHL players over the 6th round. And the further back we look the more apparent that fact becomes.

While Kap and Fox are solid choices, both had extenuating circumstances attached to them that likely was a drag on their draft position. Kap was signed for years and there was concern about when/if he would come over to the NHL and Fox reportedly told teams he wanted to play at home in interviews so teams passed on him earlier in the draft. I don't think Bratt had any drags on this perceived value, it just happened that the Devils found a very good player late.

If we're looking even later, Matt Roy was a 7th rounder in 2015 and should be in the HM's for this debate at least and he played for the team that drafted him unlike say 2016 pick Brandon Hagel who Buffalo did not sign.
Jake Middleton was Mr. Irrelevant in 2014. At #210, was the last pick overall.

If we're putting all the rounds together, I'd still say Kaprizov, Fox, or Point. But the former two didn't make the jump to the NHL nearly as quickly as Bratt. Being a sixth round pick elevates him a little bit to me as well.

Its closer than you think. Kaprisov is a better player but the Devils got 4 extra years of Bratt. Would you rather have 4 years of Kaprizov or 8 years of Bratt?

The Wild likely pass on the better value and take the super star.

Kaprizov is leading the NHL in scoring and is in MVP conversation.

It’s very uncommon for forwards taken outside of the 1st round to do that and it’s extraordinary for a forward taken in the 5th round to do it.

If Kaprizov stays healthy and keeps having monster seasons he’ll be in Datsyuk late round find territory.

As a side note, it’s not uncommon for later round goalies to have success. Several later round goalies either won the Vezina or were a finalist lately (Hellebuyck, Shesterkin, Saros, Ullmark, etc). They were fantastic picks, but not uniquely successful late rounders. So I put goalies in a different category.

Is he gonna stay in Minnesota? What’s going on there

Glad this got bumped so that I could be reminded that some of the stuff I said back in mid-August was weird as hell.

Anyhow, Jesper Bratt is incredible and even as a goalie fan I can't help but focus on him when he's on the ice.
