Ovechkin if he wins a Cup this season again (2nd Conn Smythe would be nice too) or at least has a PPG playoffs will pass Jagr IMO

It's the classic apples to oranges to bananas comparison. Goalie to Forward to D-Man. It just can't really be done.

That said, if I had to build a team around one player in the current era, I'd pick Lidstrom.

Between him and Hasek for me, Lidström is close to them but clearly third. Ovechkin is 4th in my book but could go either way between him and Lidström depending on what you value, obviously hard to compare different positions.

I also believe Jagr is the 5th best/greatest skater of all time and Hasek got a very compelling case for being the best goalie bar none, in addition to being the only player I can see have a case for making it a "big 5", so it's not a shame Lidström(or Ovi) doesn't really stack up.

Hahhah Ovechins joke compared to Jagr

I have no idea how anyone can not say Hasek. He was the nearest comparable to the almost impossible saying of a "one man team"; and his accolades and numbers back it up.

He's arguably the greatest player of all time especially playing the toughest position in his revolutionary goaltending method-- that no one else has ever come close to replicating again.
Goalies are underrated in those all time lists. Hasek and Roy were so valuable to their teams. Jagr is awesome and had a great career, but I would not hesitate 1 sec when choosing Hasek.

I don’t usually rate goalies on all-time lists and look at them the way I do pitchers vs. other positions in baseball. Two lists.

Anyway, I would say Jagr is definitely the best European ever in the NHL, and Ovechkin would be my #2.

I have a hard time saying “all-time” because I don’t really know much about European hockey players aside from a handful of international tournaments and Europeans in the NHL. What about players from behind the Iron Curtain? One or two international tournaments a year - many against non-NHL competition - just isn’t a large enough sample size for me.

I would take Hasek and OV ahead. From a pure domination stand point Jagr might be ahead of Lidstrom but Lidstrom is close enough talent wise and was less soft/head case/whatever you wanna call Jagr back in the day that I would start a team with Lidstrom over Jagr for sure

Calling Jagr soft compared to Lidstrom at any point in their careers is quite funny.

Jagr was a black hole three seasons straight with the Capitals. Ovechkin always rebounded from his subpar years.

And he won that Conn Smythe.

Jagr just isn't the best. He can't be.

Yeah if you consider top 10 in points per game a black hole, something Ovechkin didn't do for multiple seasons in his career.

lol. There's such a huge gap between "wins a cup and conn smythe" to "ppg in the playoffs".

I think the greatest European players in the history of the NHL are Hasek, Lidstrom, Jagr and Ovechkin in some order. I'd personally tend to have Jagr #1 and Ovechkin #2 with possibility to surpass - either soon, or in time. I'd say if he gets another cup/smythe he would definitely surpass.

Bourque has a lit of some average achievement over Lidstrom, like a bit more elites seasons.

Lidstrom played 20 seasons and got 16 season where he got Norris consideration, Bourque played 22 seasons, 22 Norris top 7 voting.

For elite type season (top-5 in Norris voting)
Bourque: 19
Lidstrom: 13

Season receiving Hart vote
Bourque: 13
Lidstrom: 11

Top 10 Hart
Bourque: 8
Lidstrom: 5

Top 5 Hart
Bourque: 2,2,5,5 (He lost an Hart to Greztky and one really close race to Messier)
Lidstrom: 4

Lidstrom playing on a stacked team for pretty much all is career is not necessarily good to get a lot of Hart votes too.

Lidstrom also didn't get noticed by many people until the late 90s. He was so unshakably, but quietly good, that a lot of people didn't realize how good he was. Especially when he started in an era where physical defensemen were the stars of the game. So it's no surprise that his first nearly decade being the best positional d-man and having the best vision ever wouldn't be noticed.
