Is it time for fans to get over the shootout ?

Get rid of the loser point and we'll see far fewer shootouts.
Make winning before the shootout worth more than winning in the shootout, and we'll see far fewer shootouts. Just like if you make winning ........ well, you know where this is going - and, you know there's 14,000,012 ideas for new point systems coming after that.

How is it not legitimate ? It is the same players going against each other. If a shootout isn't legitimate then why are breakaways legitimate ? Because that's what the shootout really is. It is a breakaway relay.

Because breakaways naturally occur during the process of the game. They aren't manufactured. They're completely different.

I turned off the last shootout the Bruins were in. Just checked the score a few minutes later to see if they got the extra point.

Put a defender a little behind the shooter. Make them feel the pressure like in a real breakaway opportunity. Tripping is an automatic goal.

Shootout is a good thing. Casual fans really love it. It's also nice to have a resolution to games

It feels ransom, but 3 on 3 OT is starting to feel just as bad

I say yes. The shootout is never going away. Has it ever been brought up at the GM meetings even once.

The shootout was implemented 18 years ago. There has to be a lot of people who are just heard their dads complaining about it all those years ago and for whatever reason, took up the cause themselves.

Maybe there should be a minimum speed rule. The shooter has to go in at breakaway speed. Determine what breakaway speed is. If the player goes below that speed, its an automatic miss for the shooter.

While we are at it, there is starting to be some concerns over 3/3 overtime.

Thoughts ?
No problem with the shootout. Just get rid of the loser point

It's not legitimate because it's a dumb skills competition deciding a game.

It's like baseball going to a home run derby after 2 extra innings

It is not a coin flip. The better goalie or the better shooter wins.

A team with more elite forwards has a better chance of winning a shootout than a lesser skilled one. A team with an elite goalie has a better chance of wining a shootout than a team with 1.5 million dollar goaltending. That is not a coin flip. How is this not obvious ?

I remember when Jussi Jokinen was a shootout God and Jagr was awful at them.

If the penalty shot was an accepted play the shootout as a tie breaker is legitimate other wise its just losers who can't get with the majority of fans who complain cause they love ties and the deflating feeling it gave most

Is the penalty shot not legitimate?
