I say yes. The shootout is never going away. Has it ever been brought up at the GM meetings even once.

The shootout was implemented 18 years ago. There has to be a lot of people who are just heard their dads complaining about it all those years ago and for whatever reason, took up the cause themselves.

How is it not legitimate ? It is the same players going against each other. If a shootout isn't legitimate then why are breakaways legitimate ? Because that's what the shootout really is. It is a breakaway relay.

Maybe there should be a minimum speed rule. The shooter has to go in at breakaway speed. Determine what breakaway speed is. If the player goes below that speed, its an automatic miss for the shooter.

While we are at it, there is starting to be some concerns over 3/3 overtime.

Thoughts ?

I never watch it. Not interested in watching a skills competition decide a game.

I turn off the game after OT. Might check the next day to see who won the coinflip point, but I don't watch hilights.

There's no SO in the playoffs, so being good in the SO does absolutely nothing for a team's playoff chances.

Whining about it almost nightly is not accepting it. But tell me specifically why you don't see it as legitimate

You just described the shooutout.
I said aside.

Breakaway you miss there's still so much going on.

Shootout its a shot and done. Players come in going slow as f***, winding and weaving and shit. Goes so slow and annoying.

You do get some nice moves, or nice saves, but overall it's lame.

I don't like it, don't whine about it nightly or at all really. I was fine with ties in the regular season, but get those aren't what the NHL wanted.

But, it's just starting a different game to reward an extra point. I feel the same about 3 on 3.

It is not a coin flip. The better goalie or the better shooter wins.

A team with more elite forwards has a better chance of winning a shootout than a lesser skilled one. A team with an elite goalie has a better chance of wining a shootout than a team with 1.5 million dollar goaltending. That is not a coin flip. How is this not obvious ?

I am with you, but just constantly see the majority of NHL fans bash it.

As an old mainly goalie I love them and don't know I'd that's a disconnect. So many people act like it's just random or only the skater matters and talk like a goalie isn't an active participant.

I also prefer chaos or elements involved in sports over a purity like view. When it is called a gimmick, I'm always left thinking, so what? There's no need for some purity case. I Would prefer a 3pt system but thats not directly shootout dependent.

A few years ago I stopped watching the SO entirely. Last time I remember really watching a SO, Zuccarello still played for the Rangers. OT ends and I turn it off. I'll check the score five minutes later to see what happened. I know it seems stupid but I think the SO is stupid, too, so whatever.

Do the 3-on-3 and then just call it a tie of it's not settled then. I understand this is probably not good for marketing the game; I'm just sharing how I feel about it personally.

You started this thread hoping for a lot of people to agree with you, but it doesn't seem to be going that way. Maybe it's not the wonderful thing you think it is?
The result is exactly what I expected. Being against the shootout (18 years in) seems to give people this misbegotten sense of purity cred. It seems to get worse as time goes on instead of better.

Maybe that's because few people wanted it and continue to dislike it instead of somehow deciding that they suddenly do like it after so many years?

It is the best goalies and players in the world staring each other down and trying to outwit each other.

But I agree that the shootout should be done at breakaway speed. Which is usually fairly fast
