Is it safe to say that no one will match Mogilnys 76 goal season in 77 games?

another proof old hockey is a joke. Mogilngy would not score more than 40 goals today. All grezky/Orr records ahould have an *

More proof that better talent existed then.
Orr and Wayne are hockey royalty.

Mogilny was a terrific player.
Selanne and Bure are Hall of Famers.

Hmm...I can`t remember when NHL teams started using trap as defensive system. I do remember some coaches wanting to ban it in the 90's though.

People keep forgetting that there two really horrible teams in their first season that year. Ottawa's roster was laughable and San Jose (I believe) was also pretty bad. If you want 60+ goal seasons hope that Las Vegas and Québec are that bad.

92/93 is pretty much the most inflated season for offense in the history of sports.

Watched some older games lately and lived them. Goalies weren't all that much worse, they found a way to make saves. They're just better athletes now (Vasilevsky wtf) and equipment is light years ahead. They're not light years better though. More effective obviously but they were no joke. Just that much difference is the difference between the numbers between them and now. You could put a young Darren Puppa out there and he'd hang in there.

True enough. It's half goaltending, half defensive schemes. And minor improvements in both make major differences in scoring. If the average goalie saves an additional 1% of his shots against, that's a ~10% drop in scoring for skaters. If defensive schemes suppress shots by just a couple extra per game, that's a 5-10% drop in shot attempts (and, by extension, likely scoring).

It's mostly due to the change from stand-up to butterfly-style goaltending. I read where about 2/3's of goals are scored within a foot of the ice, while a 1/4 are scored in the top third of the goal, and the rest scored in the middle. The current style of goaltending is designed to take away more of the bottom third of the goal.

The only solution I see to counteract this is to widen the bottom of the goal and make goals a trapezoid shape.

He wouldn't score 40? Where's the proof of that?

We're now in an era where the Art Ross winner will barely surpass (probably) 90 points. Some might call that a joke.

acutally theres been 12 seasons since the mid-30s to have a higher GPG avg than in 92-93.

But, the 92-93 season had the highest amount of high scoring forwards. It was probably due to expansion teams and high PP count.
