Is height exaggerated leaguewide?

Legitimately 6'7" and 270 lbs here. Never stood next to a player taller than me, but there probably aren't any other than Chara or possibly John Scott.

Most NHL heights are an inch or two off as far as I can tell by the few players and ex-players I've had the pleasure of standing next to.

The sad thing is that I didn't skate or play hockey until I was almost 17. Could have dominated in high school and college if I had learned to play at a young age.

You would’ve dominated? Why... because of your size? I hope this is a joke and you don’t really believe that’s all that matters.

Sidney Crosby wants to have a word with you.

I’ve never played with an NHLer or an organized hockey game in general. I have played D1 football for an SEC team regularly shown on TV though. My height and weight were exaggerated by an inch and 30lbs (I played offensive line).

I have also seem NHLers and many other high athletes in the gym. They are certainly well conditioned and lean but in general pro athletes are not the demi gods they are made out to be. Eberle probably dominated your examples because he was much more skilled, not because he was was that much bigger or faster than the general population of people who work out in a serious way with regularlity. A lot of NHL players just look like in shape dudes in regular clothes.

Ah you meant fitness wise. Yeah I agree, being in as good of shape as they are is just work. The skill is the talent.

I get your point but I think that also depends on the individual athlete. Some athletes have a God given ability and don't see the need to work particularly hard for it. See Phil Kessel. Then there are guys who may lack the God given skills and size but work extremely hard every day to make it. See Martin St Louis. Then there are the ultra elite who have the skills and also have that passion to succeed so are the last guys on the ice or always at the gym. Jagr was an excellent example of this. Crosby and Gretzky are guys who have all the skills in the world but also are always working to improve their game. Ronaldo in football is always at work. His former teammates complained about being invited over to his house for dinner and it was nothing more than another work out.

How did Gretzy work on improving his game? I'd put him in the genetically gifted category

This is even more common in the NBA tbh. I'm 5'11-6' and I once was beside Kyle Lowry outside the ACC. They must measure with shoes and multiple layers of socks on because I was staring above his head. Also, pretty sure Kobe admitted he wears two pairs of socks on top of basketball shoes to make him taller.

How much taller could an extra pair of socks make someone?
