Is height exaggerated leaguewide?

I recently had a chance to meet some players and it seemed like they were all shorter than me. This got me thinking, is height exaggerated league-wide? And I don't just mean for small guys like Gaudreau as it seemed like almost every player I met was a solid 2 inches shorter than listed. I'm 6'1 so I'm not what I'd call tall, but I was taller than pretty much every player I've met (and they were all listed as being 6'0-6'1). The only taller guy I've run into is Pavel Zacha (who is listed as 6'3 and is the exact same height as me).

As a followup, I assume weight is also exaggerated or just taken when fully dressed with pads, etc. There's no way a guy like Hall (who is listed as 6'1, 205lbs) actually weights that. He looked more like he was 5'11 and 180/185 lbs.

Yes it is known that a lot of players height/weight are exaggerated. 6’1” 205 pounds looks sexier on paper than 5’”11 193 pounds. It also happens in other sports such as in the NBA.

I watch a lot of soccer and lacrosse, and in those sports, if you're 5'8" or 5'9", you're just one of the guys. It's commonplace. If you're 5'8" or 5'9" in the NHL, you're a sideshow. I know hockey is looking for bigger guys, especially compared to soccer, but that just doesn't sit right.

If you're 6'1", you're in the 9th percentile of height on the planet. Who in the NHL isn't at least "6'1"? You're telling me pretty much the entire league is in the world's 9th percentile? Again, just doesn't sit right.

I will say this, it's probably not as bad as MLB. Every baseball player is apparently 6'4". It's incredible.

I've seen Aaron Judge up close. Like, no bullshit, he's 6'7". The guy doesn't even look real. And yet, somehow, he's like 8 inches taller than all of his "6'3" coworkers.

Maybe you've just grown! lol

Met Sabres forward Daniel Audette back in the mid nineties at a sports banquet. Excellent guy, we were talking for a while, and I noticed he was shorter and smaller than me (both wearing same style dress shoes.) I am a shade over 5'8" and around 200 lbs, er, was 200 lbs at the time. So I asked him, as he was listed at my size. He actually laughed, and said he was not, but said they wouldn't list him at 5'6" and 166 lbs. He said virtually no player under 5'8 will be listed under 5'8", and so on.

Stood next to Keith Gretzky at Sabreland (Sabres Practice Rink) in 1985. Noticed he was eye level with me. Problem was he was in skates, and I wasn't. He was listed as 5'8 I believe...

Doug Flutie in sneakers was no taller than me in sneakers, yet he was listed at 5'10". Turned out he was a great guy, and I ended up feeling bad about approaching him to see how tall he really was...

Thurman Thomas and Drew Bledsoe on the other hand, both appeared bigger than their listed sizes, certainly not exaggerated in either case. Tasker as listed.

Everyone else is probably on the up and up though....

Good topic though ace!

I (almost) met Filip Chytil. Long story, but let's just say I stood right next to him. He's listed at 6'2". I was taller than Flip Chytil. A shade, but taller nonetheless. I ain't 6'3". I'm a big guy, but I wish I was 6'3". If I were on Tinder, I wouldn't attempt 6'3".

I also met Ron Greschner, who is also listed at 6'2", and I thought Ron Greschner was gonna eat me.

That leads me to believe that this is a new thing.

Also, if you see 6'4" Mario Lemeiux next to "6'4'" players from the 90's and beyond, Mario is comically taller.

How could you tell this story and leave out your actual height?

These two guys are both listed at 6'6"

I always assumed the skates add around 2 inches, so they go with their height on skates.

i swear that visual on ice heights for the same player also vary between games if you watch.

i assume it is sifferences in skates and helmets.

Always felt Crosby is 5ft9 or barely 5ft10. If he was a legit 5ft11 they probably would of given him the extra inch for 6ft

I’m from Canada and have never heard someone say how many meters tall they are or how many kg they weigh
Not sure about you, but I'm also from Canada and all our official paperwork where I am (ID, Passport, healthcare information) is done in centimeters (not meters) and kg. We regularly use both up here, but that's mostly due to how heavily we interact with America.

It may be the official system but I’ve never heard anyone use it, do you hear people say I lost ___ kg? Or I’m 1.92 meters tall? Might vary in Canada but I’m from Vancouver and have never heard anyone use either
