Is Gaudreau too candid?

The real tragedy of this thread is the temptation to listen to this abomination of a podcast.
I'd sooner blow my eardrums out than sit through an entire 2.5 hour podcast listening to them talk about nothing, but when they have good guests on they're usually pretty good at letting them talk. Go to YouTube and just skip through until you see Johnny, that's what I would usually do.

Reminds me of a similarity to Futurama

Ferris: Good news, we've got you the contract you wanted!

Gaudreau: Finally! what's the catch?

Ferris: Well it is technically a team in the state of new jersey

*cuts to Gaudreau back at home looking sad*

"Not one decent offer"

If Devils were further in they develoment then yes but Devils aren’t looking like a playoff team yet and will take a year or two before they mean business and by then Palat is past his prime
How dare we have a proven playoff veteran in our lineup when we are ready to contend.....

Palat was exactly what was needed. He won't cause cap headaches with that contract.

I dunno mate, he just put up an MVP caliber season in a place he wanted out of
In a a contract year nonetheless, centered by a player who also had a career year, and with Matt Tkachuk on the other wing. Does Johnny make players better and is he a superstar? Yes, of course. But it's almost like context matters, last year probably goes down as the best in his career.

The podcast itself isn't that bad and what Gaudreau said wasn't even bad at all. Holy overreaction in here.

Another Gaudreau thread. I get that this is a place to talk hockey and speculate but I find it odd how so many here talk like they know the guy personally. Dude has made his decisions, who cares. Players get dicked around so badly, it’s nice to see some have a say in their own lives once in a while.

It would be an insane overreaction for devils fans to boo this guy. It’s like crying over a girl that you were never going out with. We will be fine

Pretty much this. What I don’t get is what was so bad in Calgary that he wanted to take so much less to go to Columbus of all places.

He can cash his checks in Columbus with no expectations from the hockey world outside of Columbus.

In the hockey world and New Jersey, there's a sense of urgency for them to turn all of those top picks into playoff success and he would have been making less there.

It's not that complicated.

exactly, he didn't trash talk calgary after just wanted to move on. He said he didn't want family/friends coming over all the time if he picked NJ and columbus was far enough away they could drive down but not be on his case for tickets constantly. Title is very misleading and should be updated as it's just causing a massive overreaction over nothing.

People would complain if he said the boilerplate responses, “I would’ve loved to return but it didn’t work out”, etc.

I always like when players are truthful. We all have preferences for where we want to live and work, and he’s earned the right to make the choice.

Calgary might be the calmest city, with over 1 million people, in the world. It's literally just endless suburban sprawl designed specifically to raise families. Very low crime rate.

Calgary, despite being about 50% bigger than Columbus, had 39 homicides in 2020. Columbus had 178.
Homicide rate doesn't really matter for a person worth millions upon millions of dollars.

Neighborhoods with homes worth millions of dollars have near zero violent crime rate regardless of the city they're located in.

Terrible weather and too far away from east coast

It's never necessarily a bad thing to miss out on signing a star forward to a retirement contract at $9-10M per season.

Here's the thing though. Sometimes, silence is better than nothing.

If that's the case, NJD is the last team he wants to sign for (just like Sabres for Hall last two offseason). It shows he never wants to sign with NJD. Players who never wants to be with the team usually will be detrimental to the team (ROR is an exception).

He can just wait for CBJ to finally offer him and just outright rejects NJD (like he did dirty to the Flames) in the first place.
Or he didn't think Columbus was going to reach out and he didn't want to wait too long in the process and end up on neither.

By all accounts that we can realistically obtain, NJ was his second choice of those who offered. He was happy to go there until Columbus offered and he had them higher.

At the end of the day, he had the choice and made it. Nothing wrong with it.

There’s a lot of headline watching going on with regard to Gaudreau. He has said time and time again since signing in Columbus that it was not an easy decision to leave Calgary and that he did it for personal reasons. He hasn’t said anything negative about Calgary through this whole process, and he’s given his 5-10 reasons for choosing Columbus over and over.

I’m not sure Philly or New Jersey fans have any reason to be even the least bit upset with him, if they even are. Most of this negativity is fabricated and will be forgotten soon.

No one in Philly is mad at him. He wanted to be a Flyer but our idiot GM blew his cap space on Ristolainen and DeAngelo.

From the Spittin Chiclets podcast

"They gave your bag to Risto"

*laughter*

"whoops, whoops"

"You have very similar bags"

"Actually Chuck Fletcher's became my favorite GM after the answer he gave about how it was gonna be too hard to move a couple contracts to get one of the best playmakers we've seen in the last f***ing what 5-10 years."

Gaudreau: "Oh, geez..."

"Come on it's f***ing hilarious, dude, he just didn't even want to work to get it done, so suck on that one Johnny".
