Is Benoit Really... Anything?

Don't get me wrong: I like that he works and is willing to get physical. But he just seems so... unremarkable and limited by NHL standards.

He was refreshing last year because the team was known for being a finesse team and he brought some different elements. But now the Leafs have Tanev and Ekman-Larsson has brought physicality as well. They also have McCabe. If/when Hakanpaa gets into the line-up, will the Leafs really need Benoit? He seems to be having a rough season. They can use a better bottom paring IMO.

I think everyone was aware of his limited toolbox.

Perhaps expectations were too high, or people were only seeing his physical play and thought it trumped skills.

I don't really care that he brings zero offense. The bigger issue is that he has poor puck skills. It's nice that he's willing to sacrifice the body and block shots, but maybe he wouldn't have to do it so often if he could handle and manage the puck better to begin with.

Fans see a big guy who is physical and get brain washed into thinking this is what the leafs need because supposedly they get pushed around.
Then the the lack of Hockey IQ and NHL skill comes out and all of a sudden the Don Cherry blinders come off and your like wow this guy is AHL material.

Same could be said of Reaves ….they trotted out Myers too and he was lost out there.

Not off to a great start this year, but he looked better tonight than yesterday. He also isn’t getting sheltered playing with McCabe.

He’s exactly what we’re paying for

If you wanted a better skilled puck mover, that is the guy we just ran out of town
Common f***** sense we had balance in our pairs with left and right shots and we went with what clearly hasn’t been working all year Timmins has been better than him even though he’s raw that’s concerning

He’s a physical third pairing player. He can defend perfectly well at the NHL level and can crush dudes. I’d take him over the Dermott/Carrick/Corrado/Timmins of the world 10 times out of 10. Stanley Cup champion Zach Bogosian was on the winning team tonight, these types of guys are role players on winners.
I’m rough on Timmins but this season that’s alie he’s been the weakest link for us on d all year

I don't think it's ridiculous that he takes nights off here and there if Hakanpää is in the mix and effective. There is a lot of redundancy in their skillsets, and ideally Hakanpää is the better player.

I also wouldn't mind eventually seeing Rifai at least get the opportunity to challenge for the role of third pair left-handed option - he plays with an edge too and does a lot of things better.

I don't think Benoit is enough of an issue or paid enough to be a major whipping boy, but also doesn't have to be a guy who plays every game like he has to this point.

We’ll see how it all shakes out but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the outside looking in once Hakanpaa starts up. Rifai should also be thought of as an option to potentially surpass him too.

In general the bottom pairing just needs to be better. They’ve shown flashes, Timmins more than Benoit, but overall it’s been a weak point. Anything and everything needs to be on the table to improve it, even if it comes at the cost of our favourite Frenchman.

Only in leaf land can posters blame our 5/6 dman for the terrible play of our team. He is fine for his cost and skill set.
Blame our two highest paid players for their abysmal performance. Willy scores a goal and then disappears for the rest of the game. Matthews hasn’t made a difference in a single game this year. Imagine paying him that much money for that pathetic display of poor play.

Put the blame squarely where it belongs
