All things are selfish. Real altruism doesn't exist. She got married and had children because that's what she had to do to feel fulfilled. Whatever your reason for being single, I'm sure it is also selfish.

IMO it's wrong for people to equate selfish to bad. Selfishness by itself is neither good nor bad, it simply is
This is the right answer to the question, IMO. I doubt the OP genuinely chose to be single out of some noble and selfless attempt to make the world a better place.

It just isn't any more selfish than anyone else and unlike most people, there actually is a valid and practical argument for the positive utility of his selfishness.

No being single is not selfish. Not everyone is meant to be or even wants to be in a relationship or a marriage. Or should be, for that matter.

Having children is selfish imo. How dare you introduce an innocent creature into the pain of this world just because you are afraid to die without a genetic heir. smh.

Yup. If people actually cared they'd just try to nurture the people already on the planet, not introduce more to it.

Just think, somewhere there is a lonely supermodel, consoling herself that she's merely an heiress with a Ph.D. in astrophysics who runs a global charity and secretly owns an NHL team. OP could have been with her, but selfishly decided to stay single.

Sad.

Are you describing all the things Eternal Sunshine has claimed about herself?

I just got told off by my sister for being single. Well to be more precise she called me selfish because I said that I have no plans on getting married and having kids. In case you are wondering she is married with a couple of kids herself. I think she sees me with having few responsibilities and greater freedom than she has and doesn't believe it to be fair.

I guess it can be considered selfish if you believe our sole purpose in life is to reproduce. However, I am just happier being single and am not looking for a long term relationship. Of course there are times when it would be nice to come home to someone but those thoughts are few and far between.

It was never an issue until I reached 30. Then the questions started coming from certain family members. The funny thing is my parents don't care at all!

I feel bad for women though. They must have twice as much pressure as we men do.

I spent the night making my married friends mad. I got time off in October I booked vacations that cover Croatia, Greece and Italy--they have talk to the wives before they book their vacations

Selfish means putting yourself first. Which is what you are doing. And it's not a bad thing.

Seems like a good excuse to remain single, yes? :dunno:

Also seems to me that your sister should mind her own damn business, at least that is what I would tell her.
