Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

You’re flexing an award he didn’t win? Lmao
Do you even flex bro?

Just kidding btw. I love Conan the Barbarian.

I honestly think it is fair to talk about Auston Matthews "no show" in the playoffs.

Proof is in the pudding right? No need to hate on the guy though, but fair enough to say "Matthews just does not perform in the playoffs".

That kind of talk is actually true. He does not perform in the playoffs. So.........WTF?

He's overrated by mainstream media who put him up there with Draisaitl/MacKinnon/Kucherov, sometimes even above those players. But he's probably actually underrated at this point by a lot of fans. His playoff disappearances are a joke at this point and he deserves criticism for that, but he's still in that 6th-10th best player in the world range.
It's the Toronto media. I was listening to a podcast today of one of the TSN radio shows. They said they were even questioning mcDavid last year to see if he could put it together in the playoffs lol. Kept comparing them. Saying McDavid only ahs 1 more goal than Matthews.

It hurts them to criticize matthews. It's so weird. If a guest comes on, they have a nervous giggle. "Ya know, he is playing like an elite Danault. Winning faceoffs. He's skating hard. It would be nice for a goal or two."

They gently just criticize him along the edges. I have seen Oiler fans absolutely sh** on Leon and COnnor in some games more than I see Am34 get crapped on lol

Fans outside the Leafs board on here seem to find this funny but it's widely accepted, and for good reason, that he plays with lingering injuries and has been on and off for several years. He was injured twice I believe in his draft year, out with similar things that is believed to be affecting him now, and went to Germany I believe not long ago for a stem cell operation. Those of us who've seen Matthews at his very best for a big duration of games such as that one season he was keeping pace with McDavid from the start for a while cannot be convinced he's been fully healthy. You can only give so much shit to someone you believe is physically limited versus someone who looks like they're not trying because of presumed attitude issues like when Nylander used to coast or make dumb decisions without the puck

Well the players voted him instead of McDavid for the Ted Lindsay last year.

Someone tell the players to stop their Toronto bias!

Bwahaha

Conn Smythe >>>>>>> Lindsay nomination

Btw, McDavid has 4 Lindsays, 2nd most in NHL history with one more to tie Gretzky for most. It's not an award that gets won by the same player every year.

But if we're talking player's opinions, the yearly player poll always has McDavid as the best overall player.

Look at this year's poll of tge NHLPA:

Honestly I think there’s a self-consciousness among Canadian media about being too critical of an American star player, and potentially alienating him (and other American players) from signing/re-signing in Canadian markets.

Just a dumb thing to bring up in the first place

It’s dumb to bring up that the guy was a Ted Lindsay finalist in a thread that calls him overrated?

I get it, you value your own opinion more than the players in the NHL. Just pointing out that not everyone thinks like you, especially pro athletes.

Again flexing an award he didn’t win lmfao

Also, nobody is questioning his regular season play

He’s a former Ted Lindsay winner. He was rated a top 3 player by the NHL players last season.

Only one player wins the Ted Lindsay a season. By your logic everyone but MacK is overrated because only MacK won the Ted Lindsay last season.

Nobody is talking about whether he played well in the regular season

Why is this hard for you guys?

And that's why Sasha asked if you were flexing a Lindsay nomination. Do try to keep up.

A finalist is still a finalist. Makes him voted by the players as a top 3 player last year, as I recently explained to him.

Completely contextual to this thread if you give it a moment to connect the dots.

It’s like saying you can’t say Barkov is good defensively if he doesn’t win the Selke this year. Doesn’t make much sense does it?

Not really, people (Dubas and Shanahan) were dumb enough to think every star should be McDavid in the playoffs and built a team around that idea.

Assuming the Leafs are cooked, I think you seriously have to consider moving him or at least exploring what you can get

Build around Knies and Nylander
I agree but...

Resign Marner - there is NO upside to letting a 100 point player go.

As I said elsewhere, a team on the verge of a Cup would give a small fortune for Matthews, so get what you can before he breaks down and he's worth nothing.

Who would trade for him? Gigantic contract, contributes nothing in the playoffs, questionable character

Too bad Arizona doesn’t have a team anymore, that’s about the only place I could see him going
