Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

Seems to be a Matthews hate fest going on. I'm here for it.
That hairline is something else eh? Definitely over-rated for the regular season too. There are so many players who have scored 69 goals in a season recently, just having some trouble naming them. Some help please?

When his skill sets are combined and tallied, Matthews is one of the top 10 players in the league.

Hey, I thought you guys had petitioned real hard to have him recognized in the same category as McDavid?? Top 10? What gives?

Everytime I'm reminded of that ridiculous comparison, I like to look-up these stat:

Number of points by Matthews since coming into the league:
727
Number of assists by McDavid since Matthews came into the league:
689

Then I look-up ppg in the playoffs
Matthews 0.89
McDavid 1.60

But yeah, sure, tally up all his 'intangibles'.

Well the players voted him instead of McDavid for the Ted Lindsay last year.

Someone tell the players to stop their Toronto bias!

PPG in this years playoffs, 58 in 65 for his career.

Of course the lack of goals makes a difference given hes arguably the leagues best at scoring goals. Is he Rick Nash in the playoffs no? Could he be better? Of course.
He's 36th in playoff goals since he came into the league, 42nd in goals per game. He isnt a top 20 center. There's no argument that with his ability and regular season success that he shouldnt rank higher than that. If you asked someone who only watched the regular season where Matthews should rank in the playoffs among centers for goalscoring they would say top 3 or 4. Not barely top 20.

Ovie went from 0.63 goals per game in the regular season to a 0.53 in the playoffs (ranked number 1 out of players who played more than 30 games). Matthews has gone from 0.64 to 0.38. Ovie was the best in the regular season AND playoffs at scoring goals (at a per game rate). Since Matthews has come in Ovie has been a better playoff scorer and he's more than a decade older.

The reason he gets criticism or hate is because we KNOW he's better than that. Guy almost scored 70. We've seen him tear it up, just never when it really matters. Same reason Hellebuyck gets criticism or Pettersson gets it. We know they are better than they are showing.

So is he overrated? Well if people say he's Ovechkin or on the same tier as McDavid or Mackinnon or Draisaitl then he absolutely is. If people say he's the greatest regular season scorer of this generation and one of the best two way players among the superstars then he's properly rated.

Yes, he plays weaker competition. He’s never won anything though.

Please point out where the weaker competition is:

2022
LA- 232 goals against, 9th in the league.

TBL- 228 goals against, 6th in the league.

2023
LA- 254 goals against, 16th in the league.

TBL- 252 goals against, 14th in the league.

2024
LA- 210 goals against, 3rd in the league.

BOS- 221 goals against, 5th in the league.

2025
LA- 203 goals against, 2nd in the league.

FLA- 223 goals against, 7th in the league.

That four goal differential Tampa had over L.A four years ago is doing a LOT of work to explain why Draisaitl's playoff stats are about double what Matthews are.

He's never really been the primary play driver on the Leafs, offensively, that's Nylander and Marner respectively, whereas Matthews and Tavares mostly stands around either whipping or deflecting pucks. That often makes for nice regular season goal totals, but you can't play like that in the playoffs and expect the same type of outcome, especially if your sugar daddy line-mate (in Matthews' case Marner) is physically frail and fairly easy to intimidate or push aside.

Yes, he's miles better defensively than Nylander, but we're talking offence here, I figure. You would think Matthews could do more in that department, and be more dynamic and such, and push more play, since he seems fairly puck skilled and his skating is quite good, but perhaps he just can't.

Watch that play in the Dallas vs Colorado series, late in game seven, where Rantanen drives the net and the puck eventually bounces in off of Girard's skate. People can say that's "puck luck" but you have to actually force that play in the first place for said "puck luck" to even have a chance to appear. I don't think I've ever seen Matthews make those type of plays, though Willy does on a fairly consistent basis.

What differentiates Matthews from guys like Draisaitl and Kucherov, who aren't necessarily speed demons, is that these guys have so much more versatility and bite to their games, they're not just standing around waiting for a snipe. Drai is a unicorn passer when he needs to be, and Kuch as well.

Auston Matthews is a paper tiger.

He has 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games.
2 of those goals were complete flukes.

For being paid 13.5 Million, he is completely overrated, and can't overtake a game offensively like Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kaprizov, McDavid, Kucherov, Rantanen, etc.

Update**

He has 0 Goals in the Last 8 playoff games vs. Florida.

He isn't even a threat offensively to the Panthers, they leave Matthews wide open during the PP. He just stands there and does nothing.

Matthews is being outplayed by Max Domi and Max Pacioretty offensively this playoffs.
90% of his points are from secondary assists that are completely meaningless
He’s a role player in the PO. Nothing more

Yeah people typically slow down to see a car wreck

Won the division, tied 2-2 with home ice in the 2nd round against the cup champs everyone thought would roll over the Leafs.

The demand for the car wreck exceeds the supply. You guys just love the Leafs I get it.

This ain’t a leafs thread it’s an auston Matthews thread. The leafs have performed admirably all season and are in fine shape in this series.

If he gets traded to the islanders next season and still can’t score goals in the playoffs you’ll see the same types of threads about him

If he gets traded the the Islanders, he won't have to worry about playoffs next season.
