Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

Auston Matthews is a paper tiger.

For a 70 goal scorer, he doesn't score any goals when the pressure is on.
During the 4 nations cup, he wasn't even trying to score a goal against Canada, he kept deferring to Brady or missing the net.

He has 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games.
2 of those goals were complete flukes.

For being paid 13.5 Million, he is completely overrated, and can't overtake a game offensively like Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kaprizov, McDavid, Kucherov, Rantanen, etc.

He's always failed to score when the pressure gets high.
25 Goals and 50 points in 60 career playoff games is a joke for someone paid 13.5M.
As well as 3 goals in his last 17 games, he has to be the most overrated player in the NHL.

More recently, he's trying to turn his game away from scoring, and, towards a defensive/Philip Danault type player.
He can overtake a game "offensively." Have you never seen him play a game? If a superstar is injured, do they always look like a superstar?

Doesn't Marner have a poor performance in games5 though 7?

Dennis Maruk would like to talk to you
Marner does, yeah but Marner has been fantastic this year where Matthews has not. The coaching change seems to have lit a fire under the rest of the team except Matthews

Wait, what...overrated by whom??

I'll tell you who's severely overrated - Laine

Most people think of Laine as a cap dump, even now after a 20 goal season, and Montreal fans are desperate to get rid of him.

He's a one-trick pony and not particularly good, but, if anything, he's underrated.

Matthews, on the other hand, is absolutely underrated due to the asinine narratives surrounding him and exasperation with Toronto media and fans resulting in negative overreactions from other fanbases.

Depends who you ask

This thread reminds me of when people used to ask if Ovechkin was a playoff choker.

Matthews plays an elite two-way game. He generates chances. He's had some terrible puck luck and bad luck playoff opponents. I'd take Matthews all day every day as my number one center ahead of anyone not named McDavid or Draisaitl.

Update.

He has 0 Goals in the Last 8 playoff games vs. Florida.

He isn't even a threat offensively to the Panthers, they leave Matthews wide open during the PP. He just stands there and does nothing.

Matthews is being outplayed by Max Domi and Max Pacioretty offensively this playoffs.
90% of his points are from secondary assists that are completely meaningless.

You've gone out of your way to cherrypick stats, lumping three games this playoffs with five games from two years ago. It's an invalid argument that tries too hard and stumbles over itself.

I'm no fan of Matthews, but let's be honest: He has 2 goals and 8 assists in 10 games this playoffs. His raw goal-scoring total isn't prime, but his production is very good and his two-way play very effective.

I have seen a couple of shots of him on the bench, seems to be favouring his wrist.
He’s definitely dealing with an injury.

I could buy into the injury excuse if it was a one-time thing but basically every playoffs it’s the reason provided why he isn’t performing.

Every year there are a number of players playing through injuries in the playoffs.

Let say it, 34 is not playing like expectation.......

His 2 way game is ok, but he is nowhere an Offensive threat against Florida. All were comparing him to Oilers 97...... IMO he currently does not belong in the same sentence and is not close of being the Leafs 2025 PO best player.

Can he be -: yes. can he make me eat crow - yes. But right now, IMO his play is OK but IMO he is not Leafs current engine, He is a follower.

I do think he again underperform in the PO.

Matthews is a very good player. He’d only be overrated if we were trying to put him in the top tier of current great players. If placed in the next tier down then he’s not overrated.

Great regular season player but he now has a substantial resume of significantly underperforming in the playoffs.
Playoff hockey is a different beast and he has never shown the ability to adjust.

His rating by money earned is #2 in the league. With his playoff performances would you rate him higher or lower?

When a team dedicated that much cap hit to a player unfortunately for those who don't perform to those expectations are rightfully criticized.

It's genuinely in question whether he even hits 30 goals in his first 82 playoff games. At 25 now through 64 post season games.

He has never had a pace worse than 40 goals per 82 in the regular season. He's a really good and complete player, but if his compete was built like Peter Forsberg or Sidney Crosby, he would be one of the greatest of all time. On paper, he should be a playoff beast, but he just can't translate his single most important skill to tight checking hockey. It's a shame, because an all-time goal scorer with the ability to dominate in all facets of the game is something the sport has never seen really. An Ovechkin-Kopitar hybrid... instead he wilts and disappears in the playoffs. An average-to-good #1 C.

Bold...sounds it up to me.

I hate making excuses for Matthews, especially since I do consider him mentally soft, but he’s clearly injured. Missed time this year, went to Germany and his overall on ice demeanor shows it.

Kudos to him for being productive defensively, even winning a good amount of faceoffs last night, but the guy is clearly hurt.
