Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

I wouldn't call him overrated, because I don't think anyone really considers him to be one of the greatest playoff performers.
If you think that, then I'd say you are overrating him.

I just think his playoff performance throughout his career is disappointing measured against the very high bar he created with his regular season goal scoring.
But that doesn't make him overrated in my eyes.

Matthews has never been alone in that crap, and picking this season when he clearly is not right and hasn't been able to shoot all season is dumb. He is getting chances he can't hit the net.

Is what it is I don't care as long as they keep winning.

People also discount he is the best two way center in the league
Proven by his selke wins

How is a guy averaging 52 goals per 82 games overrated?

He averages 33 goals per 82 on the playoffs which is seemingly bad but the first question I'm asking is what is the typical scoring rate differential for players in general?

And I feel very dirty saying anything remotely in his defense as I hate the Leafs almost as much as I love tteokbokki. Excuse me while I go shower.
It varies from year to year, but on average, scoring drops a bit more than 10% in the playoffs. (That's why the criticisms of Matthews are justified. If he went from averaging 52 per 82 games in the regular season to 46 in the playoffs, that's fine. The problem is the decrease is quite a bit more than we'd expect).

Leafs fan here.

Yes he was overrated when people thought he was challenging McDavid and MacK a couple of years ago.

He’s fallen off dramatically since then and has been largely pedestrian in the playoffs so far in his career.

Matthew$ has all the tools and there is still time to get to the next level but the clock is ticking. His lack of intensity is worrisome.

He’s def overpaid. MacKinnon and Draisaitl make similar money and have infinite amount of playoff production more then Matthew’s. I can contribute this to intensity. Mack and drasaitl want to win, more than anything. And there effort is rewarded with the production, Matthew’s doesn’t have that level of win at all costs mentality.

He is the third best forward on the team in the leafs post seasons , sounds like a good problem to have , sucks for Matthews but if they win nobody will care , team game

Having watched every Leafs postseason game for a number of years, I’ve always considered Nylander to be their best player. He’s so clutch. I’m not even sure Matthews is a top 3 player on the Leafs (postseason only).

I mean, Matthews is going toe to toe with Barkov this series. That's a tough ask for both players at even strength. It makes sense that a guy like Nylander, who sees mora favorable matchups, would have an easier time scoring.

I think he is the most criminally underrated player in the league by a fair margin.

He is essentially a Kopitar-Ovechkin hybrid and would be regarded as such if on any other team in the league.

How many generational goal scorers have ever been nominated for the Selke or considered one of the best defensive players in the game?

I think people who are criticizing him these playoffs really haven’t been paying attention to how effective his minutes are shutting down opposing teams top players.

With that said, he might be the most anti-clutch player of all time. Can’t even score empty net goals to put the games away late.
Everyone has told the guy for years he'll achieve nothing until he learns how to play playoff hockey and learn from Ovechkin.

It seems that he's learnt that lesson and now he's criticized for not being a true offensive juggernaut.

He's in a tough spot.

Watching the games AM has absolutely stepped up his defensive game big time and it's helped the Leafs look like real threats this year sure you might want more points but he has undeniably been a huge reason the Leafs look great.

The team is doing pretty well thus far in the playoffs, of course we have to have this negative faux argument to give the haters something to wax their bishops too lol

Hull scored 3 goals in his last 16 playoff games at age 38/39.

Matthews has scored 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games at age 25/26/27.

His playoff stats are abysmal relative to his contract/talent level and I say that as a Leafs fan.

Not to mention in his 20s, Hull had 24 goals(and 40 points) in 25 games over 2 consecutive playoff runs.

Hull produced in the playoffs.

Auston Matthews deserves some kinda award for scoring 69 goals.

Because wow, 69 is almost 70 and that is a ton of goals.

And also because 69 is hilarious, thanks for the meme, bro.

Playing Boston/Tampa/Florida every year will cause a dip in production.

They play defense and have goalies in the East.

The Hurricanes had the same problem. People talk about the scoring in the playoffs. Yeah, Shesterkin and Bobrovsky and Vasilevskiy will do that. If they were playing Stuart Skinners every round, they'd be doing just fine.

Truth is usually in the middle
If you think matthews is outside the top 10centers I think you underrate him. If you think he’s in the top 3 you overrate him.
Probsbly a better question is debating if he’s worth his contract. Cause if he’s making 9 this thread doesn’t exist

Nah. Mackinnon and Draisaitl are just significantly underpaid like all real superstars in the NHL.

There will be 50 point guys getting $7 per year this offseason.

You can't tell me a real difference maker like Matthews is overpaid when you compare his salary to all the guys a tier or two below him.

He’s not even a PPG scorer in the playoffs and scores at a 33 goal pace during them. He’s improved a lot in other areas but he’s a ghost when it matters.

I’ll give him a break on his down season because he battled through some injuries I guess but he’s consistently a non factor in the playoffs. It looks even worse now that Marner, Nylander, Tavares and even Max Pacioretty of all people have all stepped up and performed.
Doesn't Marner have a poor performance in games5 though 7?
Leave it to the leafs to build around the most ineffective 60 goal scorer in NHL history
Dennis Maruk would like to talk to you
