Mathews is a 40+ goal player, kinda hard to call him streaky when he does it every year.

Except for the fact that he's only ever scored EXACTLY 40 goals ONCE in his career. Calling him a 40+ goal scorer every year is false and takes away from the fact that he IS a great goal scorer. In a fully healthy season, I'm confident that he'd break 40 goals and get close to, if not surpass, 50. But he has yet to do that. But I know, Pace and advanced metrics etc. Maybe he scores 3 goals to hit 40 in the 14 games he missed last year. Hell, maybe he sores 13 in 14 to hit 50. Or, maybe he goes scoreless. Who knows. It never happened. He definitely has all the tools to be a 40+ goal scorer year-in and year-out. Maybe even 50+. But as of right now, he does not score "40+ every year".

To me it looks like he was basically scoring at exactly his pace for most of 2018-2019. He had a very explosive start, but he only had 2 major "droughts" (23-33, 49-53)

30 games where he scores, 39 where he doesn't, pretty balanced.

100% of his goals are scored across 44.7% of his gp.

Do you have this for other top goal socrers and as a league average?

I did Laine's season as well for fun - he scored in around 22% of his games (64gp with no goals), has 5 or 6 multi-goal games including a couple hattricks. It was much more erratic.

Most top point producers tend to score in bunches rather than spreading it out evenly over the course of a season.

Matthew's is also still a young ayer whose dealt with a couple significant injuries which cant be ignored

I think it would be pretty rare to find a player who doesn't hit good and bad streaks throughout the seasons. (happy to be proven wrong if there is data). The important part is that he consistently puts up a lot of goals each year, and has played well in playoffs.

I would argue that he is more consistent than streaky. Injuries have hampered his performance but you do not rack up as many goals as he does with just being streaky. This year will be interesting in that hopefully he stays injury free and we get to see what Matthews can do in a full season.

What? Laine scored 44 goals in a season and he's possibly the streakiest player in the NHL.

Based on Matthews' game log from last season (via Naturalstattrick), this is his stretch of games without a goal:
-5 games
-1 game
-3 games
-5 games
-7 games
-2 games
-1 game
-1 game
-6 games
-2 games
-2 games
-4 games

Longest stretch was 7 games. Also had four stretches of 5 or more games. In comparison to the "gold standard", Ovechkin had one 6 game stretch without a goal, but no other 5+ game stretches.

But that's just in comparison to Ovechkin. Someone else can go ahead and compare Matthews to the other guys who scored 40+ last year to see whether he's streaky or not.

Almost everyone is streaky when you break it down into such small increments. If you break his career games played into eighths, he looks consistent. 6/8 of the 27 game increments he scored 12-15 goals and his PPG ranged from 0.89 to 1.00.

Strangely enough, he had 6 goals and 7 assists in 9 games after coming back from that injury at the end of the season.

Doesn't that attenuate the "coming back from an injury" excuse ?

And in the 2019 playoffs, wasn't he on the ice for a lot of goals against at even strenght ?

People think being streaky is somehow an insult. Matthews absolutely is a streaky player.

2016-17: 13 and 7 game-stretch without a goal.
2017-18: 1 goal in a 9 game stretch.
2018-19: 1 goal in a 13 game-stretch and a 6 game-stretch wirhout a goal.
Yes, goal-scoring happens less frequently than assists. You can cherry-pick a narrative like this for all goal-scorers. This says nothing about Matthews' consistency compared to his peers.

Matthews is one of the most consistent scorers in the league.

He is a consistent goal scorer in a rate based system. However, goal scoring is difficult, so I'm of the mind that a guy who is a consistent goal scorer on a per game basis, can still be considered a streaky player. That sounds like an oxymoron, but I always felt that way with a guy like tarasenko too. The rates normalize over a season and he has shown flashes of 35 points in 20 games followed by 15 in 25 games. Which normalizes to be a ppgish player, but looking at the two samples apart shows streakiness.

In my opinion this comes down to him being more of a shooter and goal scorer. I'm not sure we will see the same level of consistency as a McDavid, MacKinnon type player because he doesn't get the assists to supplement his scoring. When his scoring is off, he gets games with no points because he isnt always getting assists.

McDavid is a good example of the ultimate consistency. Hes had less than 5-7 instances of 2 games in a row without a point and I believe last year the stat was that he has never had 3 games in a row without a point. Not comparing the two skill-wise or trying to start fights, but in terms of consistency that's the difference in my mind. You know that year to year you will consistently get 30-50 goals from AM, but I dont think you can say for certainty that you will consistently get points out of him week over week, and yearly totals will fluctuate more than some other players. I'd say no, but I'm close to being on the fence about it...
