Depends on where you're at.
I'm in Texas and it's nearly free to play if you start in grade school. The schools provide everything here and the sign-up fee is cheap or even waived for financial hardship.
As with most things though, you often need regular specialized coaching to make it to a high level, which can get very expensive very quickly.

it's all pay to play bullshit now. youth sports is more about the money than teaching kids good fundamentals.
