Is 11.5M for the most overrated goalie in the history of hockey the worst contract in history?

When was Helle's year not a good goalie year?
Seems to me that Helle is a steal at 8.25M over the next 6 years after this season..
Especially with the massive rise of the Cap in the next 3 years.

Teams are only as good as the goalies that back them up.
Helle has not a good year every year in the playoffs
Thankfully it’s only a stretch of 6-10 games

Damn. Yet another fanbase that confuses terrible team defense with terrible goaltending. Hate to see it.

^^^ This. The problem with the Rangers isn't Shesty so much as the rest of their team doesn't really fit together, sort of like an engine where half the gears are imperial and the other half are metric. Despite all the individual talent, this has resulted in a team that is worth substantially less than the sum of its parts and routinely suffers from fatal defensive breakdowns.

That's not Shesty's fault and it is simplistic to demand that he always bail the Rangers out of their habitual defensive fubars.

Definitely the most overrated player in the league today
Search me in his contract thread where I said it's better to trade/let him walk for nothing than sign for 11m+. Of course everyone ridiculed the notion because people never learn. Don't pay goalies.

ROFL so when goalies post sub 2 GAA and .920 SV% they're the best goalie in the world but when they suck it's the defense being bad?

I actually agree it's defense being bad but I also think when they look unbeatable it's just the team defense being great.

I've long thought that a lot of goalies look better than they are because they have a strong team defense in front of them (IMHO, Aiden Hill is one of those, and that's why Samsonov is having a good year too, because they are behind a solid Vegas team defense). So, yeah, some goalies get excessive credit for the pure dumb luck of being on a defensively good team.

Why is it when a goalie sucks it's always blamed on the team? When you have 6 straight games during a playoff push of sub .900 goaltending I don't know how it's all on the team. The Rangers as a team used to give up a ton of shots but since the new year they've had like two games where they gave up more than 30 shots and one of those games Quick started for an won. I understand shots are not everything but believe me his goals given up above expected is very high. Just today in one period it was more than 4. And if he's only as good as the team in front of him and I won't even give him the honor of saying that he is, I think he drags this team down, but even if he is, that's a 6 million dollar goalie, not a 11.5 million dollar goalie.

Well, were the goals weak or not? You should be able to tell when a goalie should have stopped a shot or if he had no chance. Save % in a vacuum means very little.

I haven't seen the highlights so you'll have to tell me. But I do agree that it's extremely risky giving that much to a goalie when you have guys like Lankinen, Thompson, Blackwood performing so well for less than half the price.

Vasilevskiy contract worked well for us. 2 cups a lot because of him.
He was still on the old contract for the first cup technically, but yeah he played even better the first year of the 9.5m deal, though he struggled a bit the past couple years. Seems heading back up now though.

IDK. He wasn't paid for his ability in the regular season he was paid because of his playoff runs he has had with the Rangers. When you get into a 7 game series, having the best goalie means a lot ask me how I know.

I don't think anyone in the Rangers front office is concerned. They are looking at it like they just want 1 run like Bobrovsky gave the panthers over those years and it was worth it for them.
