Iowa Heartlander attendance whoas (I mean lows)

I imagined "woes" ...

"established" has NEVER been an appropriate description of the Coralville franchise. For as long as the U of Iowa football & basketball seasons/post-seasons are underway every year, the Heartlanders' attendance has & will continue to suffer right along with the team's W-L record. Coupling the truly established Iowa City-area college sports draws with the 3-and-a-bit year-old minor pro hockey team's inability to win semi-regularly means the Landers will continue to see empty black & scattered yellow seats @ Xtream Arena.

According to this website, LeagueStat.com Daily Report for the ECHL, Iowa is barely staying above 1000 average fans per game. Last weekend, they had 512. Granted Bloomington, isn't much higher on the list but they have double the average as the established Heartlander.

That arena would be perfect for a certain nearby university should it ever want to start a varsity hockey program in the future...and that university's hockey program would likely draw better than the Heartlanders ever could.

The Iowa State club hockey program's 2022 suspension & subsequent reorg was a significant setback in any timeline for dreams of a DI program. The Heartlanders have time to sort out their future @ Xtream.

It caught my attention that Iowa Volleyball was playing in Xtream this fall.
They've been playing there since the arena opened.

It's a tough market to sell tickets in. Not only do you have to compete with the Hawkeyes - who dominate the sports landscape - the USHL Cedar Rapids Roughriders are 20 minutes up the road and are pretty established. They're making inroads, but attendance early in the season during football is typically low.

(Not 100% sure on this, but they may report turnstile count while most teams report tickets sold).

I don't know anyone who goes to roughrider games anymore. Or work went from 12 seats to 4 season tickets after they changed the fighting rules to a 15 min penalty and suspend you if you fight to much. Which is dumb they won't ban it outright because no one would go. But eastern iowa has a ton of competition. Dubque waterloo cedar rapids des moines ushl teams. Des moines ahl, quad cities sphl which games can be fun. And then you got all the u of iowa sports only so much money in a small market.
