the athletic's first iteration of player cards for this season came out today. dom's model has werenski as the best player so far this year in the metropolitan division (+25 net rating), marchenko as the second best (tied with hughes and fox at +22) and monahan fifth, just behind those guys (+21)

some other tidbits:
  • it has the market value of monahan's contributions at $10.5m, nearly twice his AAV. remember that if his game falls off near the end of his contract – he's basically contributed two years worth of his deal in the first year of it.
  • two guys who jumped off the page for defensive net rating: marchenko (+6) and chinakhov (+5)
  • dante fabbro's +6 net rating comes out to a $5.2m market value. he's been really, really good.

I have been wondering about the All Star game. Obviously Werenski is in. Is there room for Marchenko? Haven’t had time to build a Metro team of deserving players including 1 guy from every team.

if they're keeping the draft format around the divisional teams will be unbalanced (atlantic had 11 skaters last year, metro had 7)

going off of dom's list (and including the two obvious goalies for the metro), the all-star team for this division would look something like:
  1. werenski (cbj)
  2. marchenko (cbj)
  3. hughes (njd)
  4. markstrom (njd)
  5. fox (nyr)
  6. sorokin (nyi)
  7. carlson (wsh)
  8. crosby (pit)
  9. jarvis (car)
  10. konecny (phi)
there's a good chance it would be more like 11-12 metropolitan representatives which would give monahan (5th best player in the metro this year per dom) a good chance. if they put him in the fan vote i bet he'd easily win it.

I am at this with the 3 line 2 g format (with another choice in parentheses). I did it quickly off basic stats so I might have missed someone.

3 c - Hughes NJ Crosby Pitt Strome Wash (Aho)

6 w - Bratt NJ Koneckny Phil Necas Car Marchenko CBJ Panarin NYR Lee NYI (Ovechkin - he’d get voted in a fan vote)

3 d - Werenski CBJ Fox NYR Carlson Wash (Karlsson)

2 g - Markstrom NJ Sorokin NYI (Thompson)

So I think we agree on Marchenko.

I don’t think Monahan gets in and I bet Ovechkin would beat him in a fan vote.

ovi would 1000% fake an injury to get out of going lol

The funny thing is read the comments posted a lot of people outside the CBJ are throwing love to Kirill Marchenko mostly and some love to Z, Monahan, KJ and Voronkov

I mean, it's nice and affirming and all, but on the other hand, it's Dom and his model.

yeah… i've been really critical of dom's model in the past and i still don't think it does a good enough job of accounting for team factors, etc.

that said, this installment feels a bit more reality-based (things like severson being good but overpaid, 5v5 on ice metrics being bad for the secondary scoring guys, etc)

I just think of it as meaning "even Dom's model thinks this is a good team now". Nice but I wouldn't lean on it. :)
