The NFL has a similar problem when it comes to determining the teams outside of Detroit and Dallas that play on Thanksgiving in a given year.
The teams last year were:
Chicago - only 2 years after their last appearance on Thanksgiving
Las Vegas - 8 years (also against the Cowboys)
Buffalo - also 2 years
New Orleans - also 2 years
The games last year should have been:
Arizona at Detroit - would have been Arizona's first Thanksgiving game in 13 years
Denver at Dallas - Denver's first in 12 years
Jacksonville at LA Rams - Rams' first in 46 years, and Jacksonville's first ever
They really need to change this so that every team outside of Detroit and Dallas more or less rotates playing on Thanksgiving.
Under my proposal, the Thanksgiving games in 2022 should be:
Jacksonville at Detroit - first ever Thanksgiving game for the Jaguars, who have never played on the holiday
Tampa Bay at Dallas - first Thanksgiving game for the Buccaneers since 2006
LA Rams at Kansas City - first Thanksgiving game for the Rams since 1975, first for the Chiefs since 2006
So, the NHL needs to get Columbus, Arizona, Florida, and Seattle outdoor games as soon as possible.
Perhaps in 2023-24, Columbus at Seattle in Husky Stadium can be the Winter Classic (the first ever held in the Western US, which was made possible when it permanently moved to primetime), and Arizona and Florida can meet in the Stadium Series.
