The following article had some very interesting ideas.

https://thehockeywriters.com/edmonton-oilers-trades-roster-prospects-improve/

Summarized:

Assume $83 Million cap ceiling next year.

Trading Lucic is possible and has some precedence.

There are teams in worse positions who might be willing to trade with Edmonton. The Ducks might be willing Montour if the price is right. Suggested team might look like this:

This is pretty similar to what a lot of other people have been proposing. It really boils down to: sign a scoring winger (Stone), hope a couple young guys can play significant mins (Pulj, Yams, Benson), and find another dman.

Unreal that Chiarelli brought in half this mess in just his last month.
Spooner, Manning, what the heck...
I still also think Lucic can just go on LTIR due to his back, maybe this happens this summer...

That might be the worst bottom 9 winger group to ever play in the NHL.

I don't know how much worse it is than what we have now to be honest. But your point stands. We need some miracle to occur with 1 or 2 of the young guys.
- Pulj, lol not happening.
- Yams, likely not happening.
- Benson, maybe in a bottom-6 role

We don't really have any other options. The sad reality is that we likely WON'T find a trading partner for Lucic, and therefore won't be signing a guy like Stone. We'll most likely have pretty much the exact same winger roster next year as we have this year.

We can find a suitor, like trading Lucic for a player on LTIR who may never play again, as suggested by the article. A smaller add might be required.

His back isn’t an issue. Scheuermann’s doesn’t just keep getting worse over time. He’s as healthy as can be, and there’s literally 0 chance of him going on LTIR this summer

Why would a team with an internal cap trade a player with an insured contract for a player they have to pay? The article conveniently glosses over that, and just assumes teams want to spend extra money

The only reason it worked with the Horton/Clarkson swap is because Horton’s contract wasn’t able to be insured, so Colombus either had to pay Horton not to play, or pay Clarkson, and at least have something to show for it.

Don't forget about Bouchard and Ryan McLeod, both of whom were judged this year as "almost ready for the NHL". So much for letting the kids develop a little more before throwing them into the lineup like the Oilers have for years!

I guess there are too many facts in the Lucic thread.

Another one had to be started. lol

I didn't bother reading the article, however... Stone will get more than 8m. The market has changed. If 8m was cool with him, he would either stay in Ottawa, or go to a contender. Also, why load up Connor's line and give Drai nothing. Give RNH or Stone to Drai. 2 high end guys on each line and then a grinder to go with.

Exactly. Why would the other team do that deal?

As stated in the article, a team might decide that an NHL player who can play is better than a player permanently on the LTIR.. if they have the cap space. There have been trades in the past like this. If you think Lucic can't play in the NHL anymore.. I dunno, have you watched the last dozen games or so?

The only way I see the Oilers trading Lucic is for another bad contract, or by retaining the max, and even then, you are probably getting at best a Lucic level player back, who makes $3 per year, and you really are in the exact same spot as we are right now.

A realistic trade scenario may be swapping him for Cory Schneider. Their contracts are identical in value with Lucic having an extra year on his. The Devils looks like they want to go with Kinkaid, and Blackwood looks ready, so to rid themselves of Schneider, to get a serviceable bottom 6 winger with toughness might be more enticing. I guess we would have to bank on Schneider regaining form, and if not, just thankful that we have one less year of paying $6 million for a $3 million or less value player.

You seemed to miss the part where most contracts are insured, and players who are finished and go on LTIR don’t get paid by the team. They get paid by the insurance company. Arizona won’t want to pay Lucic when they could pay nothing.

The only way that works is if you can find a player on LTIR who’s not insured, and makes the same amount as Lucic. And that team needs to have a low internal budget so they value money over capspace (so not Horton). Oh, and that guy needs term too (no Franzens)

I dont get the hard on with stone. Bobby Mac just said he is getting 9+ a year.

If we want a 9 mil winger for mcdavid why not just play Drai (on pace over 100 points and 48 goals) on the first line like we have been doing?

Doesnt even cost assets.

Need a winger for RNH's line and to get real NHLers for the bottom 6 not prospects and AHL scrubs

I didn't miss that part at all. If a team thinks Lucic can help the team more than a player who will never return from LTIR, and cap is not an issue to them, they might consider a trade. The Oilers can add, but it won't have to be a 1st as some have suggested. If the Oilers deal Lucic after July 1st there are less real dollars for a team like Arizona to pay.
