Instances Where An Empty Net Miss Cost A Team A Big Game Or Entire Series?

The Blues had a chance to ice their game tonight against Winnipeg with an empty net goal, but one of their players missed the net completely. I believe the score was still 3-1 when the miss happened. We'll see if they rebound with a win or not.

A memorable missed empty netter for me occurred in Game Four of the WSH/FLA first round series in 2022. With the Capitals leading, Garnet Hathaway missed an open net, and Reinhart of the Panthers tied the game and Florida won the game and took the series in six.

2022 playoff series between the Caps and Panthers, Caps had a chance to go up 3-1 if Dowd (or Hathaway?) doesn’t hit the post when Bob was pulled in game 4.

Instead the Caps lose in OT and series is tied going back to FL, who won two more close games to take the series.

Esa Tikkanen missed an open goal in the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals. Wings mightve won anyways but that game 2 loss kinda took the air out of the Caps.
First one that came to mind. Gary Thorne said something along the lines of "if Washington loses this series, that could be the turning point".

Wings were down 3-1 and then 4-2 at one point, and I believe the Tikkanen goal would've put the Caps up 5-2.

It's my all time favorite hockey game.

Kings had a chance as well but the player over thought it

Didn't the legendary Patrik Stefan flub have significance?
Nope, Dallas actually won the game in OT. However, the loser point that the Oilers earned from the Stefan miss is what put them ahead of the Blackhawks in the standings - and in the draft, the Blackhawks have won the lottery, picking Patrick Kane at no. 1.

So yes, there were consequences. But hilariously, it was the other team that suffered from them.

HUGE significance for the Oilers
That 1 extra point we earned from tying the game allowed the Oilers to overtake the Blackhawks in the standings, and we got Sam Gagner instead of Patrick Kane.

Stefan gave us the decade of darkness instead of possible multiple Stanley Cups.
Beat me to it

In the Kings-Oilers first round series this year there was that one game where the Kings were scoring on Skinner at will it seemed but had countless chances to score on an empty net after Edmonton pulled Skinner. So they were able to score on Skinner easily but couldn't score on an empty net to save themselves, make it make sense.

This game gets nominated from comeback of the year in sports

Yes, and it should get nominated.

But - narrowing it down further - does it even win comeback of the NHL/Central Division/First round matchup/Game 7/Central Division/This weekend category? It might, but a good argument it ranks #2 behind Rantanen :thumbu:

I don't see it that way.

One goal legit
One empty net with 3 sec or so left
One -' couldn't do it again if he tried

The fantasy scenarios are a goal in last few seconds to tie/win, a game 7 OT goal. Last second bucket to win, a walk off HR yo wkn

How about an entire season?

If you were a hollywood writer and had to come up with the craziest game 7 scenario for this weekend - I'm not sure which of the 2 are more far fetched. With Dallas, there's the extra cherry on top of Rantanen being the one to cap it off vs his former team.

Anyways - it's not about ranking the two comebacks to me - the point is, both were huge and dramatic and can be in contention for greatest comebacks this year.

From my experience...

Coming back from down 3 at stsrtbof third is not hardvyo do. Coming back with under 4 yo go is much harder

Colorado also got called for a questionable penalty lste 4rd which got the PP G
