I don't think you know what a "PMD" actually is.

Because the Rangers have four defenseman with very good outlet passes. Staal also has a great outlet pass, but he's hurt.

No, the Rangers don't have that #1 offensive option on D. That i agree with.

PMD can skate end to end and provide offensive creativity. No Ranger blueliner has that ability. Maybe Moore or McDonagh to lesser extents.

A puck mover is a player that is capable and excels at moving the puck up the ice. The Rangers have those players.

What they need a #1 offensive D like a Kris Letang. DZ is good, but he doesn't have a good shot and his offensive game is very inconsistent. Maybe he can develop into that player. Who knows.

I think a legitimate PMD should have

1. Good first pass
2. Good transition game with puck on stick.

McDonagh and MDZ have good first passes, but I question whether anyone on the roster has good transition game. McDonagh is probably the closest. DZ doesn't have skating ability IMO.

Imagine if Sauer and Staal were healthy?

We could have

McDonagh Girardi
Staal Sauer
Moore Del Zotto
Stralman

Del Zotto probably becomes expendable if Sauer is healthy.

Keeping this thread on-topic, Moore lost 6 teeth (2 top, 4 bottom) after the puck hit him in game 1. Jaw feels fine. I would post the tweet but I can't find it.

Wow did he really? He barely look phased out there.

I know if I just got 6 teeth knocked out id be on the ground crying

Here ya go

Arthur Staple ‏@StapeNewsday
#NYR D John Moore lost 6 teeth (2 upper, 4 lower), but no jaw damage after taking puck to face in G1. "It feels fine," he said. #yuck

Stralman has been one of our best defensemen in the regular season and the playoffs yet you see people constantly looking to replace him. Why? Because he's not as physical as Sauer? He threw some huge checks on Ovechkin.

If Sauer was healthy and Playing well (along with Staal being healthy) the Gaborik trade most likely would have been different and we would have a first round pick instead (ours back?). But alas we will never know...

I like Sauer, but I'm not 100% sure I'd rather have him and a first over Moore. Moore just has a lot more upside. However, if the first turned into a top 6 forward, who knows.

I'd say Strålman is our best PMD.

IMO he is better than any of our other defencemen at getting the puck out of our zone and start an attack the other way, mostly because he can do it quickly. Girardi and Del Zotto seem to take ages before they do anything and usually get swallowed up by forecheckers and have to do something panicky.

Except Stralman is better than Moore and MDZ right now. In the future, who knows.

But he is arguable top two on the Rangers right now, having a real good PO.

Indeed. The defence would probably look like this:

McD-Girardi
Staal-Strålman
Moore/MDZ-Sauer
Moore/MDZ

I'd play Moore over MDZ, but I can't say for certain that Torts would.

If I were to rank the d right now by how well they've played in the playoffs:

1. McDonagh
2. Girardi
3. Stralman
4. Moore
5. Del Zotto
6. Eminger

Girardi and Stralman are close but I'd give Girardi the nod as he usually takes more minutes and gets the more challenging assignments. Del Zotto's defense has been iffy throughout.

Del Zotto IMO is going to be a very good player but I don't see him ever becoming a legitimate No. 1 d-man. He's a 40-45 point guy with decent defensive ability. He's not particularly big or strong, his skating is not elite and his shot is average. He has very good offensive instincts but the tools--skating and shot are going to limit his offensive production--not to mention Tortorella's defense first system. The Rangers could use another offensive defenseman who at least has some of the tools that MDZ lacks. Maybe they could get more out of Moore. They could also use a legit 1st line center--questionable whether Stepan or Brassard can fill that position.

I agree with your ranking, Moore has really been a blessing...

Ouch!!! When it first happened I thought he was faking it because he was tired and needed a whistle.

I completely forgot about Stralman. :D

But I agree, he is the team's best PMD.

mcd and stralman should play the points on the PP, both can move the puck and actually get it on net and both have v underrated shots

We really need Staal back. I think he plays game 3.

For all intensive purposes, he has been shut down, for the time being.

He had been skating for 6 weeks prior (with contact and involved in hard drills) before his game 3 return against WAS. He's been barely skating since. No bueno.
