As a Sharks fan who saw it on the broadcast, seems worthy of a fine, probably should have been a penalty, would maybe be a suspension if Toffoli had more history. I don't think it was intentional, was definitely a retaliatory cross check but I don't think Toff said "I'm gonna get this f***er in the neck."

Anyway, some calls get missed. Refs missed two high sticks, a clear interference vs Smith, and a classic Stutzle dive. This was a rare Sharks game that you could argue they deserved better.

Is that technically even a cross check? Odd play.
can't say it's completely clean but at the same time Sanderson wasn't presenting him with a lot of options there.

I wouldn't be mad if they called a penalty in the moment, but hard to see them going back and suspending Toffoli for a play that, if we're being honest, has a lot to do with the wacky position Sanderson put himself in

It should be a suspension.

I get that Toffoli isn't a dirty player with a history.
But players are supposed to be able to react within one second when a player puts himself in a vulnerable position before a check, according to suspensions for checks to the head. So a crosscheck to the back of the neck should be the same. It's dangerous, unnecessary, and not a hockey play.

Should've been called a minor. I can see a fine, as it targeted the neck/back of the head, and drove his face down into the ice. An unusual play... you don't see many like that.

Cross checks to the back, and in general, get called way too little, IMO. It's been allowed for decades, and I simply don't get it. Great players like Bossy and Gretzky have had their careers cut short because of them.

Not even close to a suspension. 2 minute penalty at best. I even think he let up as well. It was pretty soft. It's just because he got hit in the back of the neck, it's a sensitive area and doesn't take much.

Stutzle doesn't dive, if you actually watched him regularly you'd know that. He just loses his edges and falls a lot, often when no one is even around him.

What was he suppose to do? Release his stick while trying to keep his balance and Sanderson leaning on his waist? Sure, a minor for crosschecking but I don't see a suspension or a fine.

Anyone who's saying this is barely a minor penalty has clearly never played hockey of any sort and taken a cross-check...

Purposely cross-checking a guy in the back of the neck, where there is zero protection, should be a match penalty. It can literally break someone's neck or paralyze them.

Sanderson definitely cross-checked him first, but those light ones in the back in the corner could be argued as a hockey play.

Toffoli's was not a hockey play. Easily a fine, might get a game or two. Not like Sharks fans would care.

If Sanderson is so fragile he gets injured on a nothing play like that maybe don't crosscheck your opponent on the arm and piss him off?
Gonna go ahead and guess that you've never played hockey. Ice or not, a cross check to a part of the body hurts a ton, aiming for the neck is just a dangerous and unnecessary play.

There are some gaps in equipment so maybe Sanderson got him in an unprotected area, but that's much less blatant than the pack of the neck/head area where there's zero padding.

Even this amount of force can paralyze a player.

I don’t see intention, so I doubt the league suspends. They should give him at least a game as a warning, because that’s dangerous, but they likely won’t.

Which is a shame, would send a good message to the league and it’s not like the sharks are battling for anything.

But it happened so quickly, I just don’t think he had time to target the neck. Frankly, I kinda think you’re out to lunch if you see it that way. Still dumb and reckless, but I think he’s just trying to crosscheck him down outta the way during a somewhat awkward battle.

It’s interesting when a player is down in so much pain they can’t move but then the whistle goes and they just get up and head to the bench as if taking a 10 second “pretend to be dead” break is a normal part of play.

Something something embellishment. Playoffs gonna be here soon boys. It’s gonna get rougher than this…
