Whether they will play in the relegation round probably isn´t in their hands anymore. However the possibility they would actually get relegated is very slim.

Hard to say... Finland is also doing pretty bad job so far. Just try to be less bad than they are;)

If Finland beats USA on wednesday in 60 minutes, States are in relegation round - no matter what happends in other games.

And if USA beats Finland and Germany beats Denmark, we are in the relegation round.

Interesting

With Finland slimly beating Germany, they're in the next round if the Danes beat the Germans as well. USA could still get in by beating Finland.

If Germany however manages to pull an upset against Denmark (guess we could call it that now), FIN and USA will settle who's in and who's out.

Don't honestly know if Finland thinking they have no pressure is a good thing or not. They certainly thought they had none against Denmark, and look what happened. Against Germany they had, and were hard as nails.

If they reach the relegation round (which is likely), they will probably still come out fine. The other teams joining them will probably be the likes of Italy, France, Kazakhstan. The US only needs to finish better than two of them to stay in the top division, and I highly doubt the Americans can do any worse than two of those three teams.

Being relegated would be shocking yes, but winning it all shouldn't have been expected. Best on best USA looks good, but they don't have the depth for this type of tourney.... as recent history shows.

1986 - Finished in 6th place
1987 - Finished in 7th place
1988 - Not held
1989 - Finished in 6th place
1990 - Finished in 5th place
1991 - Finished in 4th place
1992 - Finished in 7th place
1993 - Finished in 6th place
1994 - Finished in 4th place
1995 - Finished in 6th place
1996 - Won bronze medal
1997 - Finished in 6th place
1998 - Finished in 12th place
1999 - Finished in 6th place
2000 - Finished in 5th place
2001 - Finished in 4th place
2002 - Finished in 7th place
2003 - Finished in 13th place
2004 - Won bronze medal
2005 - Finished in 6th place
2006 - Finished in 7th place
2007 - Finished in 5th place
2008 - Finished in 6th place
2009 - Finished in 4th place

I say they will enter the relegation round but not dropping down to Division I. Unless they just completely blow it and hand games to France and Kazakhstan, they will most likely finish 1st.

If you look at their roster, it's a back up goalie, a bunch of 3rd liners, "Possible" top 6 guys, and Okposo...They need some scoring help.

It's pretty much Okposo, Dubinsky and Jack Johnson and scrubs/prospects.

Tiebreak according to IIHF website:
--2 teams: H2H
--3 (or more teams): Points against other tied teams, goal differential, goals scored. There are more, but it won't get past the first criteria

US plays Finland, Germany plays Denmark (Denmark is already through to the qualifying round)

US win in regulation + Germany win in regulation or OT: Finland to relegation round
US win in regulation + Denmark win in regulation or OT: Germany to relegation round

US win in OT + Germany win in regulation: Finland to relegation round
US win in OT + Germany win in OT: Germany to relegation round (Finland has 4 points against tied teams, USA 3, Germany 2)
US win in OT + Denmark win in regulation or OT: Germany to relegation round.

US loss in OT + Germany win in OT or regulation: USA to relegation round
US loss in OT + Denmark win in OT: USA to relegation round
US loss in OT + Denmark win in regulation: Germany to relegation round

US loss in regulation: US to relegation round (regardless of Germany/Denmark result)

So it's quite simple for the US: if they win (regulation or OT), they advance. If they lose, they go home except if they lose in OT and Germany loses in regulation.

Wow it's unbelievable to watch comments like: We americans have only a team of 3rd line NHL players and a bad goaley, so it's no surprise we lost against Denmark and Germany.
Like the Germans and Danes are a team complete of NHL superstars.. :help::shakehead

I just know it. It's gonna turn out like this and Germany will finish the group with 2 wins and one narrow loss against Finland and still get relegated! After that moral will be down Ehrhoff won't be coming and we'll be playing Belgium next year. Something has to be done about this stupid tournament format.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it should be the top 12 teams advance, no matter what pool they're in, because then you have a situation like what you said. Granted, the US may still be in the bottom 4 if they lose in regulation on Wed., just saying though.

Actually the only thing that I really don't like about iihf tournament formats is that you take points to the next round. But only those you got against teams that happen to be in the same round.

Germany deserved to go down last year, so it's only fitting if they get relegated on home ice. What an embarrassment it would be if the US is playing in the second division next year, unlikely but not impossible right now.

What did we really expect? There are only about 5 guys on this team who got serious consideration for the Olympic team(or were on the team). Johnson, Oshie, Okposo, Dubinsky and Yandle. Not to mention, about the 8th best American Goaltender. Behind Miller, Thomas, Quick, Howard, Conklin and Anderson.

To be brutally honest, that would probably be more embarrassing to the IIHF, like you know, perhaps it should be considered as a little clue that your tournament is not appealing to the top players in the game and you currently have reduced quality ?

I really do feel bad for the USA, they absolutely don't deserve the humiliation.
