IIHF considering rule changes(UPDATE: now approved)

That's a very self-centered view. I heard somewhere that Coronation Street (a soap opera) is very popular in Canada and can't be shifted for hockey games. Not without protest by its fans at least.

Nowadays with a gazillions channels, digital recording and live steaming the tv time slot argument makes no sense, and in 5 years it will mean even less.

Anyone know when the results of the 2014 IIHF Annual Congress will be published? It's supposed to conclude today (24th of May). End of day or maybe Monday?
Actually I'm now wondering if there are any active IIHF member on HFBoards... and if not, WHY not?

 If there were, you think they'd be stupid enough to make it public so that they'd get pm'd by bitter/conspiracy nuts who think the IIHF is screwing their country?

Major proposals that were accepted for the IIHF Rule Book 2014-2018 include:

  • Moving the blue lines to 22.86 metres (old: 21.33) from the end of the rink to increase each offensive zone by one and half a metres and standardize the length of the offensive zone at all IIHF Championships.
  • The dimension of the rink is adjusted to 26-30 on 60 metres (old: 29-30 on 60-61 metres) with other dimensions in IIHF competition needing IIHF approval.
  • Hybrid icing will be introduced beginning in the upcoming season in all IIHF Championships and qualifications.
  • Spin-o-rama or lacrosse type of moves in penalty shots where the player completes a 360° turn as he approaches the goal will be prohibited.
  • The membership has agreed that goalkeeper equipment should be reduced and that the “cheater piece” on the goalkeepers’ catch glove is the first piece to be removed as a recommendation. This will be tabled for discussions with manufacturers. As such, it will not yet be included as a rule in the IIHF Rule Book 2014-2018. The purpose is to give the IIHF and manufacturers the opportunity to discuss this initiative along with other measures to reduce the size of goalkeeper equipment.

Wasn't the spinorama move just approved some years ago after being previously banned?

I approve moving the blueline, it will be interesting to watch how it effects offensive play and goal numbers.

Dunno about the IIHF rules, but in the NHL they wanted to ban it, but the players didn't agree so it stayed legal. It's still awkward as the puck must not stop, nor can the player which makes it very hard to judge if the shot is actually legal during the attempt as a ref on the ice.

I think this is just a case of making an enforceable rule instead of trying to apply the normal rules to an awkward shot. It's far better to ban such a marginal shot than work in a ton of exceptions and clarifications to the existing rules that apply for 99% of the actual shots taken.

You can use these move further in a shootout. Only for a penalty (punishement) is this move forbidden.

Looks like vice versa:
Spin-o-rama or lacrosse type of moves in penalty shots where the player completes a 360° turn as he approaches the goal will be prohibited.

Granlund -type of "lacrosse" goal and spin-o-rama goals are still allowed (and those should be) - except when the game goes to the shootout or if it is a penalty shot called before a shootout.

Umm, no. The quoted passage means just what TemplateR said. But to add to TemplateR's point, do note that the link is an article, so it might very well be that by "penalty shot" the author meant the shootout, as well. This would make sense, and I think this is exactly what was changed. That is, no fancy maneuvering on a penalty shot nor during a shootout. Unfortunately, I can't find the new rulebook online, so I can't check.

Oh, and I also can't check whether they have changed one other rule. Namely, I don't know how many of you were watching or remember the CZE - LAT game at the Olympics. During that game, Latvia scored on a powerplay, but no light went on, so the play kept going. Afterwards, they checked the video replay and awarded a goal, but - and here's the stupidity of the rules at that time - when they reset the clock back to when the goal was scored, Hanzal, who was serving the penalty, not only had to remain in the box (ugh #1), Latvia was given a new full powerplay (ugh #2). I've never seen this before, and, yeah, I was just baffled.

Banning drums is imo stupid. Most good european club teams have organized fan clubs with a drummer that "controls" the chorals - and its awesome!

I agree i love watching czech extraliga the drummer are so amazing the atmosphere is awesome!!!!
