Just Be Nice
There’s just no justification for giving him a contract that resets the goalie market to the degree he is seeking.
Sometime last year I started noticing the goals he gives up are some of the softest goals I’ve ever seen. It was crazy to see in comparison to some of the insane saves he makes.outside of his vezina season he's an average goalie in the regular season.
Nope. However, he'll still be a problem for us when we have to play against him when he's elsewhere. If Igor doesn't sign with us, he'll raise the cup with another capable team that can play marginal defense in front of him and can score goals in ways other than the PP and to include it (A team like the Avs come to mind). We'll be lucky to be a wildcard team if he decides to leave.

Igor is a great goalie cmon.
He’s lost his patience with this team and for good reason.
Whats the incentive of going balls out when half of the leadership on this team isn’t willing to do that for a period
With that said - don’t extend him for those gaudy numbers if you can get back a solid return that kick starts a retool/build
I would imagine signing the biggest goalie contract in league history, which he thinks he deserves, would be a pretty large motive?
That Vezina season is starting to look like the outlier (which is fair enough, he was lights out all year).
His other seasons as starter have SV% of .916, .916, .912 and .913 so far this season. None of which screams '$11m+'
He's a good goalie, and he can a game breaker at times, but you can't invest that kind of $$ for that expected return
Yea, Igor is to blame for sure.
He's played 18 games, 20 goalies have played at least 16. He's not playing that many more games.Literally no one is saying that it's all his fault. But he also is lagging in goals saved above expected. He's 13th in goals saved above expected according to Moneypuck, playing more games than most goalies.
So, then how does not signing an all-star goalie make us better?Any Rangers fan who was here for the Lundqvist era that wants to give Shesterkin 11M+ for 8 years is insane. That has nothing to do with whether Shesterkin is great or worth that much. It has to do with the fact that we have watched this exact film before and know how it ends. Poorly constructed and flawed roster that isn’t good enough to win it all despite an elite, possibly the best, goalie spends a decade making the playoffs but never improving enough to get over the hump, while along the way drafting in the 20s every year and spending youth and assets constantly trying to buy the missing piece of the puzzle until the cupboard is pretty bare, the goalie is no longer elite and all of it was futile. You can be the biggest Shesterkin fan there is and still understand that this team shouldn’t sign him or they will constantly labor under the delusion that they’re actually a contender when they will always be a pretender at best. The flaws NEED to stop being masked by elite goaltending.
Ok, he's played more games than a bunch of guys behind him and that stat is very sensitive to games played. And regardless he's 13th, not anywhere close to how high he and his agent and apparently this board value him. If he wants to take the 13th highest AAV I would be all for it. But he wants the highest in history and by far the highest in the NHL.He's played 18 games, 20 goalies have played at least 16. He's not playing that many more games.
And there wasn't even before his struggles.
No goalie is worth his ask, even if he ends up getting it.
Eventually goalies will be viewed like running backs in the NFL. I'm sure some organizations already feel this way
So, then how does not signing an all-star goalie make us better?
We still need to then sign another goalie, that will cost around 5M if you want anything close to decent.
Leaves us with 6M more than we would have if we dont sign Igor.
What are we getting with that 6M that will magically make the team more complete? A 2nd line player? A top 4 Dman? (Just 1, not both).
So are we a better team with:
An elite goalie, who has stepped up countless times in the playoffs and has the best playoff goaltending stats over the last 3 years.
or
An average goalie, who we hope doesn't shit the bed like countless goalies do in the playoffs, and a 2nd line player(or top 4 dman)?
This is why you sign Igor.
The Lundqivst era has literally zero to do with anything.
Wake me up when the org decides it really wants to rebuild, instead of half-assed changes where we want to keep pushing for the cup. Otherwise, we're going to keep offering for Igor. The decision isn't if we'd pay him or not. The decision is if he's going to want to play for a shit team that's in a rebuild for a decade or a shit team trying to win it all, but continues to play beer league defense in front of him.
