Imagine you are the GM of the Canucks. You decide you need to trade one of Pettersson or Miller.

Who do you trade and why?

---

Elias Pettersson (age 26) over the past 82 games (including playoffs):

82GP 20G 43A 63P | -2

JT Miller (age 31) over the past 82 games (including playoffs):

82GP 31G 58A 89P | +26

---

Pettersson is generally considered a strong defensive forward.

Miller over the past two seasons has also been considered a strong defensive forward and is always given the matchup against the other team's best line, tasked with shutting down players such as McDavid or MacKinnon.

----

Pettersson contract: 11.6M, (8 years remaining). He will be 33 when the contract expires.

Miller's contract: 8M, (6 years remaining). He will be 37 when the contract expires.

I've heard there's potentially a clash with those 2 centers? rumors. Keep the one that is easier to work with. Deal with the trade value after that. I'm not gonna argue about what's best for the canucks I don't think it's that deep as an outside opinion.

It’s not a rumor at this point

Miller . Seems to have a hard time getting along with others. Been traded off 2 teams now. Had to take a mental break for god knows what while Petteresson played through his difficulties and still playing through them

If Petey performance isn’t rectified this year, I can assure you, one of the two will be traded before Petey NMC kicks in. Rutherford won’t be going into next year with this issue that’s a promise

Miller has a NMC, Petey is younger and tradable to anyone. Petey likely will be the one to go.

To me, Petey needs to put the big boy pants on and be reminded there are expectations that come along with his salary. If not, enjoy Buffalo!

I agree miller might be high maintenance and causes friction, but Petey is the one with a no NMC until July 1. That will decide who goes

To add to this, it's not so just about both guys being in the lineup together, it's when they are Miller is stapled to Quinn Hughes. Hughes makes everyone better.

Right now with Hronek out long term, it's Hughes and a whole lot of ugh on the back end. So it's no secret that Pettersson improved playing with Hughes.

This.

I’m not going to assume it’s Miller just because he was traded before.

I’d have to hear both of them out and make sure to trade one if a future problem seems more likely to occur with one vs the other.

Purely hockey wise I’d keep miller. I like his game quite a bit more. Think EP would fetch more too.

I'd trade Pettersson. What if you trade Miller, and Petey starts not getting along with another player, and a similar situation happens down the road. Or he goes into a weird mental slump again. He's too unpredictable. Plus you might be able to get a pretty good haul for Petey. Miller being older wouldn't fetch as much. And his contract is easier to stomach. If the Nucks are in "win now" mode, Miller's age isn't really relevant. He has the fire, the passion.

Miller AINEC. Let's ignore the fact that Miller is older and less talented. He's still a great player, and a borderline top 10 C. The real reason you trade Miller is because we have enough smoke at this point to know that there's a fire around Miller being a problem. NYR, TBL, and even not really being able to coexist with Horvat on the Canucks. He seems to have a very short fuse and a very narrow perception of whether or not his teammates are trying, and gets frustrated with them easily if things aren't going his way. He lets that frustration show on the ice, so I cant imagine it's much better in the locker room. Anyone who's played team sports, or even just team-based video games, knows what kind of teammate Miller is and how uncomfortable it is to play around him. When you're winning, things are great, and he's extremely talented, competitive, and skilled; but at this point, I'd rather prioritize the younger player with the much higher ceiling and move on from this entire dilemma.
