I think they knew before the deadline they could handle what AMs minimum ask is, if they had to. They kept his coach around, they added Doan, they brought in some forwards who could be more impactful that the guys who left, and the team is tougher so he won't have to be. A number of small positive things, plus they are apparently serious about running back the core guys or are at least sending that message. They will likely get some small concessions from him but will agree on a contract that we will all say is too short and for too much. And if the answer is, "no thanks, I'll just play, we'll talk later if you change your mind about contract"? ..then what?
Because an F U take it leave it response to an F U take it or leave it offer isn't really unreasonable.
Me, honestly, that would be my response lol. That's me though, I don't like ultimatums, particularly ones where I have the leverage, because that's a ridiculous negotiating attempt against me that is pretty much offensive, now I'm ticked.
Once AM's deal is finalized they will use that as the reason why they can't afford Willie and we will see him dealt. AM would have gotten the club pennies on the dollar so Willies return against value to the club makes him the obvious choice. I don't think Dubas had some kind of special relationship with Matthews except to bend over the first time, but I do think he had to have a plan of attack for this summer which Tre may or may not be using, as at least some of the AGMs must have been in discussions with him about that.
With Willie and Mitch not stepping into their NM/NTs the club would have had many more options and more power. But with Willie having the NT, dealing AM would have give him the keys to the vault.
The time for an ultimatum on 34 was before the NM kicked in. They know his range and they are going to work with it.
