If Tocchet Signs to Coach the Flyers Does it Validate Tampering Allegations?

Jim Rutherford can yap about the Hughes Bros who play on the ice and directly affect games but hiring the AZ Gambler by Philly to stand behind the bench is possible tampering? And to be clear I don’t even like Vancouver.

Lol.

Sports radio in Van suggesting Tocchet might get 6x6 from Philly. That’s 16 million more than Van was rumoured to offer.
Is Tocchet out for the biggest payday he can get?

Man, the Flyers really, and truly, are the worst run organization now that the Coyotes are dead. They do exactly what you expect, and if they don't, they do something far worse.

I'm not going to bitch and moan as a Flyers fan about this, because its expected. Eventually enough people will be dead or fired that they will just be a better organization by sheer luck.

In early April, the Vancouver Canucks expressed frustration over the timing of rumours that the Flyers were already in touch with Tocchet (who was still under contract) to move on from the Canucks and become the new coach of the Flyers. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks were "not happy with the noise around Tocchet and Philadelphia" and made their displeasure known to both the Flyers and the league . The Canucks emphasized their contractual rights to Tocchet, reminding other teams that he was still under contract and that any discussions should respect that status.

If Tocchet now signs to coach the Flyers, will the Canucks receive compensation for tampering?

I don't think the Canucks organization is one to accuse another franchise of tampering with the recent comments on the Hughes brothers.

The Flyers don’t seem to be interviewing a whole lot of people and there has been very little noise. That is what they would do if wanted better optics re the OP.

They kind of did the same thing and played dumb during the Michkov situation.

In the end, we should get vancouvers 1st to watch dump and chasing the next 5 years

Unless I am missing something, it was in late March that the two sides agreed to that it maybe time go separate ways, Reports started in mid march if memory serves me, I imagine the 1000000 canuck fans who work for the team and were in on every meeting will correct me. But the team and the coach and agreed behind close doors that a change needed to happen behind the bench because at the end of the day the Coach is in charge of the room and we can all agree Vancouver was a very dysfunctional team and the media smelled blood, Am I saying is it his fault? No. But he was suppose to put a lid on it and control the messege.

Every team has problems in the dressing room, but most of Vancouvers laundry was air in the public. Tock needed to diffuse the situation and did not. We do not know if he took sides or was ordered to take sides but there was a reason Vancouver more or less hit the reset button in early Jan with some very interesting trades. Some of the leaks to the media had to come directly from the players or the team, There were just too many. It looks to me each side took turns leaking stuff and I believe there were up to 4 different groups fighting behind closed doors. Just a guess, At the end of the day? The coach is suppose to set the tone for the room and it looks like he lost the room early in the season for whatever reason.

If I am right and I think I am. Vancouver and Rick T had agreed in late march the team would be moving on from him, Posters assume that Either Boston or Philly reached out to RIck. I think he reached out to them

Temper Tamper @17:18

The Canucks have personal experience with tampering with a coach under contract to another team.

in my lifetime i can remember pat quinn and mike keenan

quinn was banned from coaching for two years and were massively fined, but not compensation afaik. that was when john ziegler was commissioner.

with the keenan one, bettman fined detroit a bit for light (or unsuccessful?) tampering, fined st louis 10x that for significant (or successful?) tampering, and then as compensation apparently made the teams orchestrate a trade where st louis had to trade petr nedved to the rangers for tikkanen, doug lidster, and (by implication) keenan. i’m really not certain what the reasoning or process there was, but a weird series of events involving two former canucks and two future ones. according to one source, it was keenan acting as new blues GM essentially making a trade for himself.

then, in a boss move, bettman capped it all off by fining the rangers:

Bettman also fined the Rangers $25,000 for filing a lawsuit last Monday against Keenan and his lawyer, Rob Campbell, after asking the commissioner to investigate the matter earlier in the day.

but if bettman forces us into a trade where we send tocc and two older guys (say... myers and negotiating rights to boeser — damn we really don’t have any older guys anymore, do we?) for a young recent high pick (uh... michkov?) i wouldn’t complain

I don’t think the Flyers had to contact Tocchet before his contract expired and he stepped down. His friends run the team, he would have had idea it was his job for the taking without having to talk to them.

Plus the Canucks could have just picked up his option and retained his contractual rights. He could have still stepped down but they could have prevented him from taking another job.

Yup they did.

I don't see anything about them actually talking to him. They didn't need to. Everyone and their mother could tell you the Flyers were going to try and hire him, because it's what they do. Just like last time when everyone knew it would be Tortorella.

It is hard to believe that the Canucks would complain to Gary's league about illicit telepathic communications but these days you never know.

Not tampering; it’s business.
Van offers Tocchet 15-20 million. He expects he can get a lot more from Philly and he’s right. They pay him 25-30 million. The contracts are guaranteed.

Yup it is tampering:

In the NHL (National Hockey League), tampering refers to any attempt by a team, executive, or representative to interfere with the contractual relationship between another team and its players, coaches, or management personnel. This typically involves:

1-Contacting or expressing interest in a player, coach, or executive who is under contract with another team without permission from that team.
2-Publicly commenting on a desire to sign or acquire such individuals.
3-Indirectly influencing a player or staff member to join another team while they are still under contract elsewhere.

Relevant NHL Rule / Governance

Tampering is addressed under Article 26 of the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). It prohibits:

1-Any club from negotiating or discussing employment with a player under contract to another club.
2-Public or private inducements to players, coaches, or GMs under contract.
3-Public statements that could be interpreted as recruitment.

Penalties for Tampering

The NHL can impose fines, loss of draft picks, or other disciplinary action if a team is found guilty of tampering. While tampering cases are less publicized in the NHL than in other leagues like the NBA or NFL, the league takes such violations seriously to maintain fair competition and respect contractual agreements.

And all of that comes down too…

It's pretty deserving for Vancouver to have this happen to them considering they made Bruce Boudreau still go out and coach the team while having it become public info that they were in talks with Tocchet and would make the switch whenever they happened to come to an agreement

Rutherford probably should be fined for his comments about Jack and Luke but that was an accident responding to media reports about Quinn to NJ.

If there is proof that Flyers contacted Rick then that’s a totally different story and Flyers should have to give up a pick. However, I haven’t seen any proof, just media speculation.

Everybody's tampering, it only matters if it's an insanely valuable piece done in a completely obvious way.

Canucks should receive Philly's 2035 7th round pick and Gritty has to do travel to Vancouver next time they play.
