If Tocchet Signs to Coach the Flyers Does it Validate Tampering Allegations?

In early April, the Vancouver Canucks expressed frustration over the timing of rumours that the Flyers were already in touch with Tocchet (who was still under contract) to move on from the Canucks and become the new coach of the Flyers. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks were "not happy with the noise around Tocchet and Philadelphia" and made their displeasure known to both the Flyers and the league . The Canucks emphasized their contractual rights to Tocchet, reminding other teams that he was still under contract and that any discussions should respect that status.

If Tocchet now signs to coach the Flyers, will the Canucks receive compensation for tampering?

I can't see the Canucks getting compensation, but I could see the league punishing the Flyers by taking a pick and just making it disappear.

The classic "We're taking your 1st round pick in 2029 as punishment" NHL move, followed by the NHL turning around in 2028 and saying they'll give the pick #32 in 2029 lmao.

They did this with Kovalchuk in NJD.

It seems like every time a team gets punished it's a first. New Jersey for the Kovalchuk contract. Ottawa for Dadonov's NTC. Arizona for circumventing the combine. Chicago for covering up sexual assault... Oh wait.

The bolded were punished because their actions were "hockey operations" related. I.E. NJ and ARZ gained or tried to gain competitive advantages and Ottawa's actions directly prevented another team from making a trade that they thought would help their team.

Doubt it, some form of tampering happens all the time. It's impossible to completely stiffle the flow of information these days on who's interested in who.

While it would be exactly like the league to selectively pick and choose when it applies strict rules against tampering, it would be a huge stretch given the current "evidence" that it occured.

If they did in fact contact him while he was still under contract and in active contract extension negotiations then that is by definition tampering.

That's just not disputable. But it isnt tampering that I care about. Tocchet clearly didn't want to be there, the team could've used their team option and kept him. The fact they didn't meant that they wanted to be sure Tocchet wanted to stay on, he expressed he didn't, that's fine. He brought a lot of structure, team went from the Travis Green days of zero defense to having layers of it etc. They played and practiced harder etc. But they couldn't generate any shots on net consistently and were really predictable on offense if Hughes didn't have the puck. Not going to miss him, though I'll miss Adam Foote who clearly had a positive impact on Hughes and the D core.

If he wanted to go and a job he wanted was available, him finding out via tampering is not tampering I care about. What's the alternative? He signs and then regrets it? Would rather have a coach that doesn't hamstring young talent and wants to be there. The tampering might have done us a favour.

Rutherford likes to telegraph future events and he and Allvin are so clever that they are lying in wait of Tocchet signing with the Flyers before filing a formal tampering compliant and receiving compensation.

No forget it. On second thought, there is an obvious flaw in this argument.

What do NHL teams see in Tocchet?

He took the fall for Gretzky on that gambling scandal so he was rewarded with a lifetime of opportunity. Thats how he got the TNT job in the first place, which helped him get noticed again after his time in Phoenix didn't go so well.

He does have two cups as an assistant in Pittsburgh, so maybe teams see that and think wow he must be good. Despite evidence to the contrary.

Van rumoured offer to Tocchet on local sports radio was 20 million. Likely the Flyers or Boston will go 30 million.

I don't think Comcast is gonna be okay with paying another big salary for a coach with Torts still on the books.

We have a huge amount of money, but it's insane to keep this up with them having to pay out AVs contract during Torts' tenure.
