Straightforward title. If there was one single film you think everyone should watch what would it be?

There are plenty more dedicated film aficionados in here than myself, of course, and I’m interested to see the replies and branch out myself. I will watch every single film that’s suggested regardless of genre, quality, runtime, or time period. One suggestion per user, please.

Thank you. :)

Requiem for a dream - dont do drugs kids.
Whiplash
Moneyball
The Big Short

Not a big film guy personally.

Cant go wrong with a lot of the classics: The Prestige, Memento, Shawshank redemption, schindler's list, Silence of the Lambs, Se7en etc

Since you said that you'll watch anything that we suggest, regardless of runtime, I choose Logistics. It's a 2012 Swedish film that's credited as the longest movie ever made. It's 857 hours long, so it'll take 35 days to finish... if you don't sleep or go to the bathroom. Have fun!

IDK... I don't really think of any particular film as "required" viewing. It might be some social message film like Do the Right Thing, or just one of the pinnacles of the craft like 2001 or Ran, or just super enjoyable blockbusters like Jurassic Park, or a foundational film like Citizen Kane. There are probably some films you *should* see if you want to be a "cinephile" or whatever, but honestly that's all hooey anyway. Watch what you like.

Edit: That being said, if you want a recommendation? I'm just going to recommend a fun film I love. It's great, it has a ton of heart, it is extremely well shot. Just watch Chungking Express.

Now I'm real tempted to say In the Realm of the Senses but not sure that will go over well. :D
That's actually a great pick.

Maybe mix your pick and Shareefruck's Tokyo Story and go straight to Tokyo Decadence (not a joke, amazing film).

But truly, my pick would be L'année dernière à Marienbad, it's a marvel in narration, execution and aesthetics. My second favorite film, but IMO the purest example of what great cinema should be.

Great question.

The Kid-1921 Chaplin worked for over a year making the film, great for young and old.

Many are not into silent films so I added:

Bang The Drum Slowly-1973 My favorite DeNiro film.

Jurassic Park: The Lost World

Not because it's particularly good or anything (it isn't), but because it would be funny if the whole world only saw this random sequel with no context of the far superior original entry in the franchise.

Either that or Pixar's Up 2.

If you thought the first one was good, oh man just wait til you see the sequel. It's like an analogy of The Godfather II to Married to the Mob. That's probably the best analogy I can think of. It's just so good.

If you haven't seen it you are missing out.

Thanks Peasy, from your list I’m going with Requiem for a Dream, as it’s the only one here I actually haven’t seen.

Love that you added whiplash. Really really love that film.

lol I debated adding the “runtime” portion of my initial post, should have known one of you bastards would have suggested something like this.

I’ll get back to you next year with my review. 🤣
