That's not how it works. If the NMC is ending on June 30th of that year, the team isn't required to protect that player.

However, when you factor in Gibson’s age, contract, and performance the past few years he is likely to not be claimed in the draft. Where as the emerging Dostal is someone an expansion team may covet.

We can go round and round if the Ducks should have traded him 4 years ago, but they didn’t. The Ducks should be coming out of the rebuild, not tearing it down more.
