If the Panthers and Heat both win...

I go for business trips in Miami all the time and nobody cares about NHL let alone Sunrise Panthers. They have a local rabbit fans away from South Beach mostly older white people. Blacks, Cubans and Latin Americans prefer Heat.

It would be a MAJOR sports story, but is pretty unlikely.

For the NHL, lets say:
- Panthers vs. Canes: ~45% chance Florida win
- Panthers vs. west champ (Vegas?): ~50% chance Florida win

For the NBA, lets say:
- Heat vs. Celtics: ~40% chance Heat win
- Heat vs. west champ (Denver?): ~40% chance Heat win

If you accept those probabilities, there's about a 3.6% chance that they win both. Even if you say every series is 50/50 (which I think is a bit generous to the Florida teams, especially in the NBA), it's a 6.25% chance they win both.

...why would it not be??...it's just like why Ottawa's finally building a new arena downtown instead of being in Kannada...location, location, location, as they say...

You've got multiple factors, which can be simplified down to geographical distribution of hockey fans, traffic conditions, and the fact that downtown Miami is a ghost town after 6pm.

I think it would be an absolute disaster for the team to move back to downtown Miami.

Where much of the crowd is coming from isn’t to be ignored, either

So what you guys tell me is Panthers fans are suburbanites and Heat fans are living downtown?

Sounds like a result of where they put the arenas.

...as was just posted, it sounds like a result of where the arenas were located...as someone who, until COVID screwed things up, visits Florida multiple times a year (two brothers live in Venice), I would have had no reservations driving to Maimi to catch a couple Panther games but was not driving an extra couple hours out of the way just to drive to the Everglades; just went to Tampa an extra couple of times and caught Lightning games instead...if the Arena was in Miami, the people, at least more of them, would come in my opinion...

If both teams defeat all odds and so much as ascend to the finals, there is a synergy of parallel Cinderellism that the media will absolutely dive into.

I would hardly say Heat fans “live downtown.” People who live downtown there are either absurdly rich or homeless.

It’s probably fairer to say Heat fans are more distributed in South Florida in demographics and physical location. The Panthers attract mostly western southeast Florida suburbanites of limited demographics (which… the demographic thing is more of a hockey vs. basketball thing than it is a Florida thing).

Well, not everyone is in Miami. And many of them feel exactly as you describe feeling about driving to the Everglades about driving into downtown Miami

Consider: Miami-Dade county is 13% Caucasian, 70% Hispanic, and 17% African American. And that first number has absolutely cratered during my lifetime, propped up only by the massive influx of Russians into Sunny Isles. They moved the arena where they did because they understand which demographics tend to be more interested in hockey.

That's one way to put it, yeah.

...OK, so give me an honest answer; is there a "demographic" there that could actually sustain a hockey team without the rest of the NHL paying for them, for the most part??...

“....driving to the Everglades...” :amazed:

the last leg of the journey to the arena is by airboat ;)

“The Panthers Shuttle”

People (fans) are just spread through out Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, even up into the Treasure Coast.
...and even (taking the shuttle) from the other side of the Everglades ;)

Fans not seeing them as a waste of time and money will sustain them.
They build a reputation as a organization run well and that will pursue championships, the fans will flock to the arena, no matter where it is.

Easy to solve the problem: rename the team the Miami Panteras

Vamos Panteras!

Your mouth to The Good Lords ears, sir.
Then they lose to the Steelers in the AFC CF

Can't say I ever frequent that type of bar, but I've been in single TV restaurants where they have Panthers games on. I've been places with a few tvs where people ask the game to be put on if it isn't. I've been places where I ask why the loca team playing isn't on as well, but you made it sound like it's nearly non-existent, that's just not true.
I live in the Shorecrest neighborhood and here it is soccer of some sort or the Heat if NFL isn't on.

The arena is so far west on the edge of Everglades it isn’t really accessible for people living in Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach either.

They didn’t move there because of demographics. They moved there because Broward County offered to build them a new rink for free and that was where the available land was.

Their stadium location on Google Maps is depressing. Right on the edge of the Everglades. I'd be afraid to use the toilet at the facility.
Assuming you’re in Michigan, I don’t know if you have toilets located in the backyard up there, but down here we have them indoors…

I'd wager close to half of the fans I meet at games drive across Alligator Alley or come down from Palm Beach, which is probably pretty shocking to people from out of the area. I live out in the swamp myself these days. You couldn't pay me enough to fight city of Miami traffic on a weeknight

Also, BMW or Lexus with Heat tags is pretty much the number one indicator in the entire universe that you are about to witness a high speed collision.

A wise man once said the BMW manual has all of two things listed in it.

#1 How to bring up the fact that you own a BMW, regardless of the conversation topic.

#2 How to drive like a arse hole.
