If the NHL shrank back to 30 teams, which players would be out?

I don't think they're carrying too many AHL guys on their healthy roster. It's weird for those who might watch the Sabres because they play pretty well individually, they just don't play as a team.

I can't think of any AHL player they carried on a healthy roster except maybe Gilbert or Bryson.

I understand the sentiment though.
As the sum of their parts, they suck.

Why would the league do that?

It wouldn't. Because the salary cap and by extension the players salaries would be affected extremely negatively.

and hopefully reduce the number games per season.

This will not happen either because of the same reasons as above.

But in all seriousness, even a "small" move like contracting two teams would be devastating for the league. Broadcasters and advertisers would be very hesitant to sign on with a league that is shrinking regardless of which teams and why.
